“In 1983, Rolfe Arnhym, then-president of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce and the executive vice president of the Army-Navy 1983 Foundation, which staged the game, told the New York Times that the price tag to transport the students was $3.5 million. Nearly 35 chartered commercial planes flew the corps of cadets and brigade of midshipmen to Los Angeles. Once there, about 1,500 stayed in hotels while 7,500 were housed with 3,800 families in the Pasadena area.”

Every time the contract comes up for renewal, non-Northeast corridor cities bid. The hard parts are indeed transporting both Brigade and Corps, and providing overnight accommodation. It’s a very steep hill to climb.

The thing that surprised me as the father of a plebe is that finals started on the Monday after the game. I would think this would be a complicating factor for travel outside the Northeast.

I could do Miami in December. Or Phoenix.

This is an article about the last contract renewal. PHL Sports is a powerful and deeply experienced sports consortium, part of the Philadelphia Visitors Bureau, who knows how to sweeten the pot. They want all those visitor lodging and food and transportation dollars coming to their city.

No doubt cities are gearing up for the next round or are already into the contract bid cycle, as I think Philly in 2022 wraps up this contract.

If there is a pay wall, clear out the cache in your device and see if that re-sets the “free story” counter.

There was a big discussion about this on Facebook yesterday. In general, people think that the Government can just fly the mids/cadets to wherever they want to have the game and that it should just move all over the place to let it be near every military base and city. Very few understand the COST involved and that it does not come from the government.

Based on last cycle, the decision should come out next summer/fall, to give the 2023 host a year to prep. Selfishly, I would love to see a distant venue for that year, or at least Baltimore/DC just so DS could experience 4 different venues during his 4 year Annapolis adventure.

It would be awesome to see Army-Navy in Jerry World or Mercedes Benz in Atlanta. Or what about the new stadium in Vegas?
Recently read (don't remember where) that Jerry World was a possibility and that Roger Staubach could be an influencer. I'd like to see it there too. Perhaps the two could have a working lunch to hash out the details for A-N '23. Jacksonville, with its big Navy presence, also expressed interest.

Leave Vegas out. I've been to the real, Venice, Paris and Egypt.

I can't think of a single class that has had A/N at 4 different places. I'm not sure that any have had 3 different places but that might have happened between Philly, Baltimore and DC.

the host city (or host organization) is responsible for transportation costs of the mids and cadets. for NY/Phil/Balt/ and even Boston, that amounts to a bunch of busses. But for areas outside the northeast, it's airfare plus lodging. Makes it harder to make the finances work for the bid.

there might be some big financial backers for an LA bid this time around though, maybe Dallas too

It looks like a few classes would have had 3. The only ones with 4 were 1944/1945 due to having the 2 home/home games sandwiched between Baltimore and Philly. (at least according to Wiki and boring conference calls)

A/N used to be the first weekend of the Dec. it was pushed then the Conf Playoffs all got added years ago, it was moved to be the only game again. Finals was a concern with the move in schedule. Logistically moving 8-9000 Mids/Cadets is expensive and takes a lot of time and planning.

I wonder what happens once the power conferences eventually come up with a 16 or 32 team playoff, and that 2nd Saturday gets even more competition than the week before. Do they move Army/Navy back to 1st Sat?

There is a great vintage photo I’ve seen of the Corps arriving in train cars by the dozen. I can’t find it again.

16 or 32? wow, that's a lot.

What about by ship? Our volunteer for the USNA tour told us that story during parents weekend (maybe it was Iday…but one of those)!!

Arrived by ship. Walked through farm fields and grabbed a goat for the mascot.

2023 has already had 3 different places: Philly, West Point, and NJ (any Philly again next year).
