I am getting ready to send some mail to my son. Does anyone read through their mail or is it kept private? Can we put photos in the envelope or should I wait on that. I don't want to do anything that will draw any attention to him.

In general:

During Indoc:
Packages are opened in front of everyone
Letters/cards/etc are passed out in front of everyone, but usually opened individually. You can send photos if you want, but in all honesty just send them after indoc. Nothing worse than getting pictures of 'what I'm missing out on' during this time.

After Indoc:
All mail goes to their individual mail boxes and will only be opened by the individual whenever they want to open it.

KPMom, My son is at home waiting to go out to sea and he said that the letters were passed out and they were never required to open them in front of anyone. The packages, on the other hand, were opened and if they contained food, they were placed at the end of the hall and they were only allowed to eat it during free time.

You can send as much food and candy as you want, but like what was said earlier, it can only be eaten during the... five or ten minutes of free time the candidates get (sometimes) per night. the food is also passed out to the whole platoon. I was a drill instructor last year and we were NOT allowed to read anyones mail. Packages were fair game- we made the kids open all packages in front of us and the rest of the platoon. No letters sealed with a kiss from their girlfriends if you don't want them called out on it!

Thank you for your replies. This forum is such valuable place for new parents, thanks to those of you that are so willing to share your knowledge. I can rest easy knowing that I won't make his life any harder than it already is right now ;)

I sent a big box of candy today to all of the 4th company. I put in enough to include the Drill Instructors as well as all 77-78 cadets, plus extras just in case. We were wondering if they are given a hard time about boxes of treats that come in that are sure to include everyone? I do not want my son singled out when I am trying to encourage and treat 4th company!
