I am a Sophomore in Ohio and my transcript thus far has looked good. All A'sand B's. Well all has looked good besides this past semester.I got 6 Bs and a D in Chemistry. Is there any chance of still getting into West Point?

I still have two Quarters of it until the semesters end .But no I can't take it as an elective.

You still have 2 semesters to recover. Get help from your teacher, peer tutor or someone. Or all of them. I am sure if u ask you will be able to get help. If you can take that semester D and make it a B for the year, it will show that you have the ability to make up for your mistakes. If it stays a D it won't look good to any college. Also I don't know what your HS transcript looks like. My DS school only reports final grades no semester grades show.

Mine reports semester grades but I think your point still stands.Ok thanks for the advice.

I graduated with a degree in chemistry and chem engineering and there were times when I struggled with the material. But, if you can get the concepts it will start to make sense. But it all builds so when you get lost it is hard to recover.

Befriend the Chen nerd in you class and have them help. Take a couple of stepBack and relearn what you had struggled with. Be persistent and work hard. You can do it.

No no military experience for me. DS wants to be a sailor. That's why I troll this board.

Most colleges will notice your junior and senior years. One big reason, this is the time your results from ACT/SAT test scores come into play. Also your class ranking becomes clearer as a result of you GPA. The hard truth, not going to sugar coat it. Get a grip on Chem! Its a Plebe killer and it has taken out a few Yearling that just got by. Your not just going to a normal college, WP is on steroids, your every minute will be accounted and scheduled not only for academics but athletics, military and other issues. Your summers will be scheduled also. The place is a pressure cooker you'll be taking 20 to 22 credit units for 47 months that you are there. Now, still work hard and still pursue your goal of WP. It will make you better prepared for Plan B and Plan C

Push Hard, Press Forward

Ok thanks! To be honest there's nothing worse than sugar coating.Something I really value is honesty.Thank you!

Im new to here so excuse me for asking this question but what is plan B and C?

For many here, including my DS, plan A was a service academy, in his case, USNA. His plan B was USMA. The Citadel which is an SMC was plan C and Plan D was a state university, close to home in Army ROTC.

He received a nomination to USNA and USMA, but did not receive an appointment to either. He was accepted to The Citadel, but no ROTC scholarship so he would have had to take some loans out. He chose his state school and entered as a non contract AROTC cadet and earned a 3 year Army ROTC scholarship mid way through his freshman year.

I got a d my first semester in precalculus and then got it up to an a second semester. I also got a c in ap Chem first semester than a A second. This never became a problem for me in my application process but my congressman interview panel did ask me about very very briefly. Show improvement mostly and Maybe in the future you could write one of your essays on getting a grip on chemistry.

One of the biggest things you need to remember about Chemistry is that your Chem or Physics teacher will do your Student Evaluation when it comes time to your application. If you have just persistence, positive attitude, the desire to learn, etc. your recommendation might offset the not so stellar grade. Work hard and be persistent!

Time to bust it for the rest of the year. Later, in your application essays when you write about overcoming a tough spot, you can write about how you struggled in chem when you were a sophomore and how you got additional tutoring, met w/ teacher, studied, etc, etc, and figured out how to beat that class and make an A. This is an opportunity to show you can do hard work, so take advantage of it! Cadets face similar situations daily. Show that you have what it takes.
