Academic Classes

ohh alright Needle. I didn't know if they told you or not, a lot of people talk about them so i assumed.

2013, if you want to take Japanese, go for it. They will screen you with the DoD language battery to see if you would be capable of handling it. I will say, the minor is difficult. Probably the only classes I've really struggled with here are Japanese.

Validation:
Chemistry: 5 on AP and validation test in BCT
Calc 1 and 2: each requires a BCT validation test
English: 5 on AP lit or lang
Languages: BCT validation test except Spanish/German (online test prior to coming)
Comp Sci 110: Validation on BCT test
Comp Sci 210: 4 or 5 on AP Comp sci A or AB test
Physics: 5 on the C exams (depending on mech or elec)

For the ones like chemistry, can they only be validated with a 5 and a good validation in BCT or will a good validation be sufficient?

For the ones that don't mention a validation, are the courses only waivable with AP scores?

Do cadets go back home for Thanksgiving? Which breaks do cadets usually go home on?

So for Calc 1 and 2, we have to validate in BCT? Will they not accept college transfer credits? It's been a year since I've taken these classes & I don't really remember a ton...

Do cadets go back home for Thanksgiving? Which breaks do cadets usually go home on?

In the appointment packet there's some information on breaks. There's a break for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and the open summer program slot used for leave.

I figure it depends on the cadets and which ones are worth heading home. I've heard some stay during thanksgiving because in another month they'll have leave again and it will be longer. In theory you could go home for all of them.

On top of that... what are some of the spring break plans cadets usually have?

Could someone shed some light on validating Economics?

On the AFA site it says a 4/5, and then it says "Generally required to take course if student has taken only the AP Microeconomics exam." (Actually it says that across from Comp Sci, so I'm assuming it's suppose to be for Econ)

So if I got a 4 on AP Micro and a 3 (or less?) on AP Macro would that work?

Also, could someone please post a 1st year class schedule?

Thanks.

Starvin,

One Spring Break option is "Alternative Spring Break."

Cadets work with Habitat for Humanity to build houses in locations like: Phoenix, Santa Fe, College Station, Wichita Falls, and Montrose, CO. :thumb:

Fall 2007

Chem 222 - Analytical Chem
Engr 100
History 101
Math 253 - Calc 3
Physics 110 - Honors Physics

Spring 2008

Spanish 322 - Advanced Spanish
EngrMech 220 - Fundamentals of Mechanics
English 111 - Intro/Composition & Research
Math 245 - Diff Equa & Matrices
Physics 215 - Honors Physics II
BehSci 110 Intro Behav Sciences

Above reflects validation out of Calc 1 and 2, Gen. Chem 1 and 2, placement into upper level Spanish and honors physics. There's also Phys Ed and intramurals each semester. First summer was ops, GE/jump, and leave. Rather than ops I believe you'll now get CST.

First spring break was a redeye direct to Cancun post Recognition. Second spring break will be jump at Gila Bend, Az as a WOG. IC's also have to give up some of their breaks.

Oh awesome, I don't think I would minor in Japanese since I'm already bilingual and it would be absolutely insane to keep English, Spanish and Japanese up to par with each other, but I'm definitely taking some basic classes and see how that goes (maybe audit it?). How come they don't have a "study abroad program" for Japanese? They have it for Chinese, Russian, and Arabic.

Anyway, thanks for the help Hornet.

I find it interesting that in our instruction kits it says that it is recommended to take Arabic or Chinese.

Arabic is an interesting language. I've tried the Rosetta Stone for it. Difficult, but interesting. Might try to get into that class if I can.

I wish they offered Hebrew. It's such a cool language. I guess there isn't much demand. When will I know if I'm qualified for Scholar classes?

Study abroad? Sure, I have a friend in Japan now at their NDA for a semester and another at a civilian university. I have gone on a spring break trip to Japan as an immersion paid for by the Academy. Many of my friends did the 4 week immersion over the summer and got class credit for it.

For the ones like chemistry, can they only be validated with a 5 and a good validation in BCT or will a good validation be sufficient?

It's ambiguous, but if you absolutely rock out the validation test, they will probably boost you. They don't advance high chem achievers as high anymore (only one class up instead of 2), so it's not as much as a concern.

For the ones that don't mention a validation, are the courses only waivable with AP scores?

AP and IB. Usually you need a 4 or 5, most of the time a 5 now, in order to validate. Only a few allow this like English, non-core computer science, and Physics C.

Do cadets go back home for Thanksgiving? Which breaks do cadets usually go home on?

I go home Thanksgiving and Christmas. I only had summer leave my first summer (went home), but haven't had it since. Some stay here and ski during Thanksgiving. Some stay because its cost prohibitive to go home twice in a 2 month period.

For Spring break, my trips:
2007: Cayman Islands
2008: Osaka, Japan for immersion
2009: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I like going OCONUS! :)

Also, could someone please post a 1st year class schedule?

Don't worry about that for awhile. Just do your best to get your grades high.
