In my Sophomore year Algebra 2 Honors class I was caught cheating on a test, I cheated on the question which I was told was the hardest by a classmate in the prior period as well as the answer which he put. With only a couple minutes left in class and multiple failed attempts at the problem in question, I made the poor decision to use the answer which was given to me by the other student in the prior period. The teacher knew that this was the hardest question on the test and that many would cheat on the question so he changed that question on the test between periods so it was clear who cheated on the test. I along with multiple other students were caught, I regret my decision to fall to such a low level as cheating and I feel I have grown since then and have made it a priority of mine to not participate in any activities which could be considered academic dishonesty. Because of this experience, my grade took a major hit and I turned to the teacher for aid in the class, from that point I began to realize the helpfulness of talking to teachers more and it has lead me to eventually become a Teachers Aid for the same teacher.
I was wondering if I disclose this on the application question which asks "Have you ever been placed on probation, suspended, or expelled from High School, Preparatory School, or College?". I was placed on a one year contract with the school.
Will this affect my likelihood of getting an appointment?
Thanks

If I were your father, I would advise you to.
You clearly have grown and learned from this experience, and I am sure that the teacher who caught you would even say so.
In my mind, it would be better to bring it up on your own, rather than if they were to ask you...”Have you ever cheated?”, and they realize you only brought it up because they asked.

I don’t know you at all, but you sound like a kid who made a stupid mistake and have learned a very valuable lesson.
We all make mistakes, the SAs want the kind of people who own up to them, and actually learn from them, and never do it again....which sounds like exactly the kind of person you are.
Proud of you...
Good luck

Answer the question you were asked.
In this case to answer the question you were asked schedule an appointment with the guidance/college counselor at your school and ask them whether your one year contract is classified by your district as probation. If it is then answer honestly if not then the answer is no. If yes provide a brief but clear explanation (get an adult or two you trust to review/edit it with you) .

If it is appropriate to disclose it, then disclose it. If you do disclose it, I think you would not only possibly have an essay topic, but you could also get a great recommendation letter from this teacher.

Agree with @emwvmi01 and @brewmeist . I don't know how many times folks have ended up with issues because they answered a question incorrectly because they didn't understand it. I've seen kids who have been given tickets who were ready to answer 'yes' to 'have you ever been arrested'. The correct answer in my example is 'no'. I'm not sure what the correct answer is in your case because I don't know what a 1 year contract is. You should check with your guidance counselor and answer accordingly. If you do have to answer yes, along with your explanation, I expect it will be chalked up merely as a youthful indiscretion you learned a valuable lesson from. They're not looking for folks who don't sin and walk on water... they're looking for intelligent leaders.

RTFQ/ATFQ ...Read the full question/answer the full question (yes....FULL., this is a family oriented board, not a bunch of sailors!). Answer the question that is asked, not what you think the question should be. That being said, you should also be careful of about quibbling, or being a sea lawyer, as even if you are technically right -sometimes the appearance of trying to wiggle out of something is more damning than the actual problem. In this case, I like EMWVMI's recommendation ...talk to your guidance counselor and make sure you really understand what the intent of the "one year contract' is.

With respect to your original question ..if disclosed, will it affect chance of Appointment , I don't anyone here can tell. If you have to disclose, my recommendation would be to own the problem, explain how it affected you, and what you learned from it. Personally, I recognized that kids make mistakes, and how you learn from mistakes is better than not ever having made a mistake in your life.

Just talked with school officials and they informed me that the academic contract I was placed on is not a probation, it is a contract which if violated would result in disciplinary action, not disciplinary action its self. Therefore based on the question asked it would not fit the criteria and would not need to be disclosed at this time.
