How long do these setbacks last? If a mid is on an academic setback must they wait an entire year to take the the course that they failed over again, if it’s not offered at another college? If setback is disciplinary in nature, how long is mid sent home for?

Agree with @StPaulDad.

Why is this posted in the USMA forum, if it pertains to KP?

All cases are different. The answer depends on which class(es) was/were failed or what the disciplinary issue was. Best case scenario for a failed class is that you can re-take the class during the short summer session. If you fail more than one class or have a serious disciplinary issue, the most common course of a setback is that you leave the academy and return to retake the classes during the same term the following year.

a setback is one year in both cases. Academic setbacks are pretty common. Disciplinary setbacks are rare. In 4 years I’ve heard of two. One was for rape or alleged rape that was never proven another was for public intoxication and indecency on a Navy base.

if you fail a course at KP you have to retake it at KP under academic rules. You are usually required to take the subject at another school if offered and then repeat it at KP. You don’t Just get out of it by repeating the course at a community college.

may be another casualty of the trimester system. Back when it was quarters I saw setbacks of varying lengths for both academic and disciplinary. It wouldn't necessarily make sense for a one year academic setback to return and find the class you need to redo not offered for another semester.

As an example ... I was set back at Christmas time my 1/C year for failing the same class twice with no other opportunity to repeat prior to graduation. I went home for six months and returned to repeat my whole 1/C year. It would not have made sense to be setback a year and return in the same position of not having the opportunity to redo the class prior to graduation.

I also saw disciplinary setbacks for both six months and a year depending on the severity of the offense (not me, a friend).

How can people set themselves up for success? As in, looking back, are there any general or specific recommendations as to how not to get set back?

What? Public intoxication is wrong?

It wasnt just that it was the shenanigans while he was intoxicated.

If you failed the same class 3 times you wouldn't get a forth the way the current admin is. I've known one guy that got a 4th attempt at Calc 1. He ended up never making it. And yeah it does happen like that sometimes, but the end result is your graduation is one year later in all cases. So still a year's setback. People take a setback to switch from Engine to Deck and never leave school, but their graduation is still setback a year.

Easy not to get set back.
1. Don't do stupid stuff.
2. Don't hang around plebes/mids who do stupid stuff.
3. Do not use alcohol to the point where you do not realize stupid stuff when you see it.
4. Use free time to study before goofing off or going into the city.
5. Seek help early and often in every class where you are not 100% confident.

True, a set back is always a year in the sense that you graduate one year later although the time away from school may be shorter.

I had a classmate of mine that was set back to redo the last six months of 1st class year. He spent time the interim sailing as an electrician (he had passes license, but since he didn't graduate, they couldn't give him a license, but did give him a QMED endorsement.
