My son is a 2014 candidate and is starting to have doubts about the academy. Does the academy allow prospective students to visit prior to accepting an offer?

Do you mean 2015? Yes, they are allowed to visit. I did the same thing in January, but it was only for a day.

We are planning a trip up to visit soon. Can anyone recommend (or NOT recommend) places to stay?

Is it best to arrange through the ALO or the AFA?

Thanks !!!!!!

(Since this thread is about visits I thought better to post here rather than spread out the info over another thread. No attempt to hijack it.)

My family has always stayed at the Academy Hotel. It is convienent since it is next to multiple places to eat and is located next to the south gate

Hilton Homewood Suites at Exit 151. Exit 150 is the South Gate entrance.

There are three orientation sessions each April for those with appointments - and some wait to decide until then.

You can also set up an individual or group visit through Academy admissions - there are a few black out dates during military training periods and finals. Setting up a visit before a football weekend may be interesting as there's usually a noon meal formation on Fridays.

My son is a member of 2014 and is hosting a candidate tomorrow, which he's excited about. He did the program in January of his junior year - basically AF only offers daily visits, other than orientation (in April) which is only for candidates with appointments. I know a few others who do get the overnights - mostly recruited athletes or "target" candidates. Tomorrow he picks up his candidate around 9:30 and brings him back around 3:30. Before that the candidates have a briefing, and if you're at least a second semester junior, you can meet with your counselor.

As far as hotels, we've been happy with the Drury Inn. Not as much so with the Best Western Academy Hotel - mostly for customer service issues (nothing wrong with the hotel itself).

This is great ! Thank you all sooo much. We'll nail down the dates and go. We were hoping to be there on a FB Saturday but the timing just won't work out. Tomorrow I'll see if I can arrange a 'ride-along' for our son.

Call the ALO...see if they can set this up.

I know I've done that for several candidates in the past.

My son went as an athletic recruit for a few days after he was offered the LOA. AFA paid for everything and he had a great time. So, if your son or daughter is considering DIV I athletics, contact the coach soon.
