Accept scholarship while waiting for SA decision?

I know this is putting the cart before the horse, but I’d rather be prepared to give DS solid counsel sooner rather than later.

DS’s 1st choice is USMA. 2nd choice is a toss up between USAFA and AROTC. If DS is fortunate enough to be offered AROTC scholarship and SA decision is still pending, does he accept the scholarship? And if so, does that lock him into AROTC or is he able to “give it back” if he’s lucky enough to be appointed to USMA. The recruiter at his top choice civilian school, to which he’s already accepted, was pretty confident DS would get at least 3 year (we take this with a grain of salt because his job is to RECRUIT after all!)

Following on @EDelahanty, many incoming cadets/mids have won ROTC scholarships and hold them until they take the SA oath. ROTC honors the scholarship until the oath is taken, then it becomes null and void. Holding the scholarship is an important component of Plan B.

Thank you for that info!! Does the oath happen the summer they report, I assume? DS would know but I don’t, eek!

We are really crossing fingers for SA but know that his portfolio is just like 1500 other candidates so hopefully he won’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t come through. USMA is plan A, USAFA and AROTC w/ scholarship are in a deadlock for plan B. DS really wants to commission in the Army but he also says he prefers SA to normal college. Plan C is enlisting straight out of high school...not my preference for plan C but considering he announced at the beginning of junior year that he planned to skip college and enlist, it doesn’t surprise me. My husband, as an enlisted Army vet, convinced him that if he wants to do career military, which DS does, he wants to be an officer. So long story short, DS wants badly to serve and really wants the military experience to start ASAP and feels SA would be the best place for him to get that and an education, leading to officership. If he gets an appointment to USAFA and not USMA, I don’t know what he will do.

The oath is administered on the first day of Plebe Summer: I-Day at USNA, R-Day at USMA, don’t know what it’s called at USAFA. Then they wave bye-bye and the fun begins.
