Acceptance Day

Leave your food, drinks, etc. in the car. After you meet up with your DS/DD you can go get your stuff and find a place to hang out and picnic. Many families find a place close by to lay down a blanket/set up folding chairs, etc.

If the weather is hot it might be nice to find somewhere indoors to eat and visit. After all, they will have just finished a two-hour parade in the hot sun. Since most parents will park by the cadet field house and walk to the parade field, I would suggest heading back that way and into the field house or ice arena. We went into the ice arena and found a table on the concourse. It was air conditioned and a great place for some privacy. There were very few families in there.

So if you bring food, do you bring it with you to the ceremony or leave it in the car, or ??? I know this is getting into the weeds but just curious. Thanks in advance.
I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking!

You will not be able to get the food through security at the parade field. Leave it in the car and then once you get your cadet (and some of his friends without family there) from the parade field go back and get the food and find a nice shady place to eat it and enjoy.

I'm sorry but I'm just learning some of the military terms. I thought the squadron had a name (ie: Cobra), but they have a number too?

Flight, hotel and car=Booked, now I just need a plan for food! Can't wait!

Like BlahuKahuna said, since your DS is a Cobra, he will be in one of the academic year squadrons 11-15. To determine which one he is in all you need to know is what flight he is in for basic. He is in either Cobra Alpha, Cobra Bravo, etc. There are 5 flights in Cobra (A,B,C,D or E). Each one will become a part of an academic year CS (cadet squadron). A is 11, B is 12, C is 13, D is 14 and E is 15. Being military, they don't call them just A, B, etc. They are referred to as Alpha (A), Bravo (B), etc. So for example, if your DS is in Cobra Bravo he will be in CS-12.

For food, last year we went to Wal Mart deli the night before and bought cold cuts and bread, chips etc. We also went to Chic-Fil-A the morning of A-Day and bought hot chicken sandwiches. They were open and serving really early. The crowd wasn't too bad either. We made sure to take plenty of food for others in his squadron. Great memories ! I'm excited for all of you headed out this year !
Can you give me an idea of who much food to get? Thanks!

I am bringing as much as I can carry. If my sons friends dont finish it, I am sure I can find many other cadets who can.

I think that spirit of giving to classmates continues long after BCT. We live 9 miles from Langley AFB, VA. Last summer when my son was doing AF Ops at Offutt, he had friends doing Ops at Langley in all 3 sessions. We have an old beat up Honda Civic that one of my kids drove in High School that we made available to the visiting cadets. Didn’t see it for 9 weeks other than when they drove it to the house for regular dinner invitations. We have another of his classmates and his fiancé coming this month to use our house as a home base while visiting the local area during his summer leave. It means a lot to our son and we are glad to do it.

That's awesome and exactly how all my DH's Army buddies are. He was only in 3 years but the bond is unbreakable!

That's the thing that I think impressed me most about the academy. After BCT it amazed me how our son talked about his fellow cadets. I could tell it was a bond that would last a lifetime. These were his, and effectively our new family. For us it started on A-Day last year buying extra food and continued through the academic year as we sent care packages with our son and his squadron mates/roommate in mind. I hope I am always blessed enough to keep on giving to USAFA classmates. I know others have been a blessing to our son when we could not be there. The relationships made through USAFA are extraordinary.

Is there a chance to briefly meet with our basic during Sunday chapel service, or is the public segregated?

Flying in from Pennsylvania for A-Day! Oh, my green horns of envy went u p! We're from the Steeler Nation and did not go to I- or A- Day but really made the most of every single second of PW (no sleeping for us!). So exciting!

Make sure you bring enough food to share and be fully prepared to share your phone with a cadet whose battery is dead or who otherwise has no phone. And oh, bring enough food to share. And then, BRING ENOUGH FOOD TO SHARE.

that ought to cover it. :)

Does anybody know about acceptance day? I was not planning on going originally, but it turns out I will be in the Denver area anyway. I have heard conflicting stories -- would we get a few hours with our cadet and is there a schedule anywhere? I was not able to find anything on the website.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the helpful posts. I am going to make it, and will get into the Springs about 5:30p on the 3rd. Anybody else have a Basic in Hellcats A/ 36? If so do you want to try to get together to coordinate a food spread, etc?

I had been told that Chic-fil-A was fantastic.. had some last visit & wholeheartedly agree! Closed on Sunday tho:(

We are closer to Philly than Pittsburgh, but we have tons SERIOUS Pittsburgh Steelers fans in this area! DH and I decided to divide and conquer, I will go to A-Day, he will go to PW and take his mom. It will all make good memories!

Ebotter, if you can swing it, I personally would recommend skipping A-Day and joining DH and Grandma for PW. You may pm me if you would like to do so.

Have to agree with fencersmother. I was very blessed to be able to attend both A-Day and Parent's Weekend last year. Although A-Day was a great experience, if I HAD to choose between the two, I'd pick PW, hands down. You're talking about spending 3 hours with your kid on A-Day as opposed to 3 whole days on PW. However, it may be important for your family to have someone there for both events.

Chic-Fil-A was open early on A-Day last year. We stopped there about 7:00 a.m. and ordered several chicken sandwiches along with large containers of tea and lemonade. I was surprised they would make lunch that early. We were in and out of there quick with a bunch of hot sandwiches for our DS and his friends.
