Accepted Appointment - Now What?

wow! Congrats, that was fast. Congressional nominations have not even been released yet in our State.

Would removing wisdom teeth count as a medical DQ? I thought surgeries within 6 months was automatically a DQ and non-waiverable.
My ds got his out at the beginning of May last year and wasn't even required to inform DODMERB unless he had complications like dry socket (instructions were in the appointee handbook). It was nicer for him to recover at home with mom taking care of him than in a dorm room (my experience as a cadet). There is a 4-8 week before BCT deadline (I don't remember exactly but it is in the handbook) to make sure that you don't have any complications and have enough time to heal so the sooner the better. Even if you do have complications and are able to completely heal before BCT, they will not DQ you. It is not a requirement but it was nice to get it done and I enjoyed seeing him drugged up for the first time. Funny that his surgeon was a former AF oral surgeon and was amazing.

Enjoy the next six months, stay fit and don’t get injured. Life will be chaotic and crazy once you enter USAFA so just have fun until then!

@Capt MJ said it best. Be sure to RUN! The one thing I did not appreciate when my DD went to USAFA for Basic Cadet Training, was the ALTITUDE. The Naval Academy is obviously at sea level. West Point is 682 above sea level. USAFA is 7,258 ft above sea level! Summer training is challenging at all SAs, but USAFA's altitude is very different.

Last month, the San Francisco 49ers spent several days at USAFA practicing at altitude to get physically ready for their game in Mexico City against the Arizona Cardinals (that game was played at 7,200 ft above sea level). Nick Bosa (NFL Pro Bowler) said that their "trip to the Air Force Academy tested the players' ability to stay positive." These world-class professional athletes were exhausted after spending a few days exerting themselves at USAFA. You will be tested for six weeks! Start running now and keep running.

Congratulations on your appointment, and good luck next year!

This! Unless you have experienced it, it's hard to explain how challenging the high altitude is when you have spent your life at or around sea level.

Run run run run run and run some more

Just to add to the list above, if you are able, it would be wise to have your wisdom teeth evaluated and removed if recommended. This should be done at least two months before I day in order to allow proper healing and to account for any complications. Congrats!!!!!
Do we have to ask permission to do this? I can’t find a definitive answer anywhere. Thank you!

@shiner @Capt MJ If the appointee comes from the Prep School, do you know if they need to fill out the SF-86 again?

Short answer - I don’t know, but rest assured all the related “admin” required for their application process, they will be coached on and walked through.

One of the “currently at NAPS” threads might have a specific answer.
