Good Evening!

I applied last year to USNA and was on the waitlist until late June when they notified me I was not given an appointment for the class of 2025. I was very disappointed, but motivated to try again this year.

In order to have a chance to receive an appointment but still pursue my dream to be an officer in the navy, I joined NROTC at my school on the national scholarship. My first semester was great— I got a 3.647 GPA and an A+ in calculus. I received 2 nominations, was given an LOA in February and was notified of my appointment offer in March.

This semester, I’ve had a very hard time in my Physics for Engineers class. I have a busy schedule (much like last semester) including Calc 2. I currently have As in all other courses and expect them to stay that way as I approach the end of the semester. However, physics is the issue. At this rate, it is possible I receive a C, but there is a chance, given my later exams, that I receive an overall grade of D in the class. By USNA standards, D is not failing, but at my university, physics is a C wall class for engineering.

That being said my question is this: will USNA take away my appointment if they receive my transcript and I received a D in physics? Any knowledge you have regarding this subject would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

First of all, you received an offer of appointment. You aren't appointed as a Midshipman until you take the oath on I-Day.
Second, your offer of appointment could be rescinded for a number of reasons. Getting a grade of C in one of your classes this semester is not something that would most likely trigger a decision to rescind your offer. Getting a DUI or otherwise breaking the law and spending a night or two in jail would certainly give them pause, however.

You say that there is a chance that you may receive a "D" in the class. My advice is to do whatever it takes to not let that happen. If you haven't already secured a tutor and endeavored to talk with the professor about what you're not understanding, then you had better do that post haste. That would be my advice no matter what hangs in the balance.

Building on the responses above: you should always consider yourself “on notice.”

As others have said, USNA probably won’t pull your offer because of a D — but they could. Keep plugging away doggedly, as @THParent says, to get that grade up. Not just for the sake of getting a better grade, but for the sake of learning the stuff. Because once at USNA, you’ll need to take Physics again along with several other challenging STEM courses. And if you struggle with it again, amid many other obligations, you may find yourself on academic probation and perhaps worse.

So worry less. But do more…and better.

Get a tutor.
Go to office hours.
Do extra problems.
Watch Khan Academy videos.
Drop whatever extracurriculars you can.
Figure out when you get a question wrong on a test, why? DId you never see that kind of problem? Did you not understand how to do it?

Get the grade up for the grade, but also this may happen to you in other classes as well. What you are doing to study for Physics isn't working.
