After searching on this forum and elsewhere, I am under the impression that if I accept my appointment to USAFA but am later accepted to USCGA, I can decline USAFA and confirm with USCGA? If I accept for USAFA, which is where I am currently leaning, I plan to stay, but it is possible that I could change my mind. Is what I stated true? As I mentioned, I was not able to find any official information on this. Thank you!

The standard deadline — i.e. college commitment date — is May 1. So why not wait until you have all admissions decisions in hand before committing to any? Saves you the trouble of having to decommit from one to commit to another. Is there a particular reason why you have to commit to USAFA now?

It would just be so nice to have some finalization. I can start really preparing, and USAFA is basically my number 1 school.

You can accept SA#1 today and then receive an appointment to SA#2 in the future and change direction. This happens every year -- you are not legally bound to anything. I would simply ask that you decline as soon as you come to a point of clarity for yourself rather than holding both slots. Some appointees never decline and elect not to show for BCT/INDOC. We had several in our BCT unit where the nametag was on the counter and they were a no-show.

To me, this is the worst possible scenario because it means that seat in the class is lost forever. An applicant who was holding out hope didn't get the call because the school thought the seat was filled.

@KiwiBird congratulations again on USAFA offer of appointment!

If you are nearly 100% sure about USAFA, then accept now, but do NOT close ANY of your SA portals - yet. It also does not hurt to wait - the SA may want you to, and the personal relationship between you, ALO/BGO/FFR/coaches etc can be nerve wracking. In my DD's case, it felt like they were pressuring her to make a decision. The hardest thing in the process for my DD was declining, and letting everyone know. Remember MANY candidates are also holding out until April 6th - IVY day - before making their final decisions.

Please do not "hurry up and accept to get the process over with" - which is sounds like you are, just a wee bit. Take your time to make absolutely sure. But also make sure you actively decline in the portals.

I have a big stuffed Kennywood arrow pillow. Let me know if you want it after BCT.

You say you want finalization, but it seems like you really don’t — hence the desire to be able to change your mind. So again, why make the decision now when your mind is clearly not made up?

Use the time you’ve been granted to get all the facts in front of you. Apply a thoughtful and through decision process. Make your pick and push the button before May 1. Voila: You made a good decision, you didn’t rush, you didn’t leave anyone hanging.

I just thought that I'd give you all an update. I plan on accepting tonight. I talked with my parents, and my dad told me to wait for a week just to make sure. I've wanted this and thought about it for more than a year now, and I am confident in my decision. Another good point brought up by my parents that made me even more assured in my choice concerns a career after the service. I would much prefer to be a physicist or an aerospace engineer than a ship engineer, and that is another reason why I think USAFA is the right one for me.

Thank you all for your advice, and rest assured that I carefully read and considered every comment. I really appreciate the help.

My DS was accepted this past week and before committing 100% wants to think things through. In normal times, we would do an in-person visit and tour. He obviously didn't get the chance to attend the Summer Seminar last June, so he doesn't have that experience to fall back on. Does anyone who has been accepted know if virtual tours are available that are targeted toward accepted candidates versus prospective candidates? While visiting the USNA a couple of years ago, it seemed a large group of accepted candidates were taking a tour just for them, so I was curious about this year and USAFA.

USAFA has announced that they will be doing virtual appointee tours and they will be sometime in April/ May.
