Accepted!-SLS

-class rank is currently terrible- top 40-45%. gpa is 3.2 cumulative (this worries me)
-PSAT- unknown for the time being
-SAT- 1870

These items are probably holding you back. Hopefully your 5th semester grades will come in and you can change that class rank.
Also they try to use the PSAT for these evaluations so it's important that you get those scores. SAT (only combined math/verbal), from what I hear, should be between 1300 and 1400. So, I'd recommend taking that again.

Otherwise, everything else looks great. Good luck!

NamD, pretty much in the same boat as you

I'm top 50% (234/504, 48% to be exact) with 3.1 GPA, but that was at the end of last year, they said they would redo them at the semester, and I have been doing better this year

180 on PSAT
1750 on SAT

I have a ton of leadership stuff (Church, band and CAP) and I am about to start P90X to get on top of the physical side, but I'm doing poorly academically :/

Just got my PSAT scores in. I am very displeased..
CR- 53
M- 50
WS- 52.
I assume at this point, i can lose all sense of hope in going to SLS?
cheers,
Dave

Not necessarily. I have a friend who received scores very similar to yours, and he was accepted.

I'm from Kent, Washington and I got into SLS over Christmas break. I have a 3.7 gpa. Top 10% of class. 181 PSAT. 3 varstiy letters. IB Diploma candidate. Technology Academy student. Captain of wrestling squad.

What's your name? Where are you from?

I am part korean

If you are rejected you won't get that letter until a long time from now.

Well i actually got a letter of rejection but got some inlcuded info that was at least somewhat good news. the rest of the letter said that i was competitive for admission and needed to do some stuff

DWatson, Im located in Bellevue. Are you also running for class of 2016?
Im full korean.
speaking of which, i heard that if you are a minority, you have a "higher" chance. is this true?
thanks!

I was rejected today unfortunately :(. I thought I had a decent application other than my ACT score...congrats to everyone who made it.

Same. Its pretty vague what they say in the letter though.

It says "while high demand for the seminar prevents us from hosting you this year...etc"

Does that mean I would have been accepted if I applied earlier (as if all the positions are filled), or does it just mean I got rejected?

Love your generosity towards those who are in--what a show of class!

Please remember that many who don't get into SLS still get into West Point.

Yeah I know I thought I was accepted at first and then I read it more closely and it said, "Prevents us from hosting you this year."

Oh and the positions could not have been filled because the deadline for the application is in April I think.

Well I applied the day it opened and I got rejected pretty fast, so take what you will. I got the same letter with the whole preventing thing too.

Looks like it's time for the, "I didn't get accepted to SLS" pep talk!

SLS is like a mini application to West Point. I understand that you are disappointed BUT look at this as a way to see what your weaknesses are and WORK ON THEM!
You have an advantage over kids who did not apply in that you now know what the weak areas in your file are, where as , those who did not apply may not know their file weakness until they get the TWE.

So here is what they look at for SLS admission:
1) Are you in the top 20% of your class?
2) Test scores? Competitive? Compare your scores to the 2014 class. (http://www.usma.edu/Class/2014/profile.asp)
Anything in the mid 500's or below on SAT Math and CR is a DQ.
3) Leadership in extracurriculars?
4) Varsity athlete?

If you are weak in any of those 4 areas, then that may be the reason you were not accepted (rejected sounds so negative).

Again - evaluate your weaknesses in those 4 areas and seek to improve them.

It has been stated before, but it does not hurt to emphasize again -
NOT BEING ACCEPTED TO SLS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE FOR AN APPOINTMENT!!!!

There are currently 810 cadets at West Point who were not accepted to SLS.

If you didn't get accepted, think about going to Boys/Girls State as that usually is at the same time as SLS and is sometimes hard to do both.
Also, if not too late, apply to the summer seminars of the other Academies. West Point will take your CFA scores from USAFA and USNA summer seminars and if you pass, that will be one part of your application that you can check off soon in the application process!

Chin up! Remember that the ultimate goal is not SLS but the Appointment. :thumb:

Thanks Buff!

I applied, like Ken, on the first day, and got the "prevents us from hosting you," paper, and something saying I was deemed competitive for admission.

I really wasn't expecting to get in. Im a two sport varsity athlete, have good ec's, but my PSAT's were the only scores I had, and I got a 49 in math:cool:

But, as Buff said, SLS isn't what were after - its the real thing.

On a side note- I've been taking SAT prep, and have found that the ACT is actually much easier than the SAT. (other than that really weird science part which is simple, but makes no sense for standardized testing).

Congratulations to everyone who got into the seminar! I went June 2010 and I learned so much, it was a great experience! I am currently waiting for an appointment.
I agree with buff81, just because you did not get in does not mean that you cannot get an appointment, and just because you did get in does not mean you will get an appointment. I was surprised to get in to SLS because I had to send my PSAT scores from 10th grade. Luckily, my SAT scores were a good improvement. Definitely work on those standardized tests, because that is probably what disqualified you for the seminar right off the bat. I personally know a girl whom I attended Girls State with who did NOT get accepted to SLS 2010, but got an appointment this November!
GO ARMY! (and keep your fingers crossed, I find out about a nomination in the next two weeks) Thanks! :)
