Accepting AROTC scholarship

Does anybody know how "binding" it is if you accept the AROTC scholarship? Is it like NROTC, where you can accept it but then if it turns out you want to do AFROTC or NROTC (or go to one of the MA's), you can back out? And what if you've already "accepted" an NROTC scholarship, can you also "accept" an AROTC scholarship? Or do you have to back out of the NROTC scholarship acceptance first? I ask because my DS was recently awarded a 4-year AROTC scholarship, but he was also awarded a 4-year NROTC scholarship as well as a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship. He already accepted the NROTC scholarship (he got it last October, so the deadline for accepting it was awhile ago); AFROTC is giving until May 31st to accept or not. He is pretty sure he wants to use the AROTC scholarship, since the school he really really wants to go to does not take NROTC, and his AFROTC scholarship would only be good for three years at that school. All this said, he is still mulling everything over. So I'm just wondering if he has to make up his mind about everything by the March 10th acceptance deadline in his AROTC scholarship award letter. Any insight anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

It isn't binding at all. He should accept before the deadline so as to not lose it. He can then change his mind at any time.

Excellent, very good to know, thank you! Also, another quick question -- DS was given the option of two schools, and the letter says he can only accept at one of the two schools. He has been accepted into one of the two so far, and that school is probably where he wants to go, but he's not 100% certain. He probably won't find out whether he will be accepted into the second school until AFTER the March 10th deadline (ugh...). Any thoughts on what to do about that? I don't think he should "accept" at the second school at this point, since he doesn't know if he will get in (and he probably prefers the other school where he's already been admitted anyway). Is the only recourse if later on he decides he prefers the second school to seek to transfer the scholarship? Thanks again!

I believe that sending a request to Army Cadet Command to transfer the scholarship is your only recourse. However, this is fairly common and @MohawkArmyROTC (an Army ROO) has posted that it is usually granted.

Edit: Here is the link to where @MohawkArmyROTC stated this:

To clarify - I would accept it at the school where he has been accepted. If he gets into the other school and decides to go there instead, he can request a transfer.

I agree with @Jcc123 that accepting the scholarship is not binding. But, don't trust us. Read what you are signing. The language in the document is clear.

+1. @5Day
Thoroughly review the document before signing. It isn't OUR eight year comittment!

Is the letter that comes in the mail going to have more information? The two-page letter that was uploaded to DS's AROTC portal doesn't have any detailed instructions.

A letter of intent is not binding.

The actual contract will look like similar to this and won't be signed until after your DS passes DoDMERB and passes the APFT.
If it is a four year scholarhship, his first freshman year is also non-binding:

Okay, thanks. I take it DS should sign the original letter that he will be receiving in the mail, not the one we printed out off of his AROTC portal. I'm still wondering if the original letter that comes in the mail will have additional pages to it with additional instructions.

My understanding after speaking with ROO from DD's first choice school is that the packet in mail will have a lot more information.

Yes, the winner packet that is received in the mail includes: notification letter, letter of intent, winner's instructions and certificate.
