Most doctors will not see a minor without a parent / guardian present. Is this the same rule with the DoDMERB optometrist and doctor visits? I hate to send him out there and get turned away bc a parent isn't along. Trying to let him run the show as much as possible but don't want to mess things up. He is 17.

I went with my 17year old daughter and was willing to be in the waiting room or examination room. They asked me to go back to the exam room with her, but I let her do all the talking.

Yes if you kid is under 18 you need to be at the medical exam. I went with my daughter a couple weeks ago and was glad I did. The girls have to undress have a breast exam and check the privates. I was allowed to be in the room with her which was nice. The eye exam she went alone. The assistant that scheduled it said a parent did not need to attend. Hope that helps!!

under 18 you should be there. i had to sign consent forms at physician. i stayed in car for eye.

I didn't go to either exam with my 17 year old kids. Both times each kid just showed ID. I did tell my daughter to make sure a female nurse was in the room if there was a male dr performing the exam. She had a female physician though.

THE REAL ANSWER: It is contained in the instructions to your son on the www.dodmets.com website
Kudos to you for: Trying to let him run the show as much as possible but don't want to mess things up. He is 17.

THE REAL-REAL ANSWER IS: I HAVE JUST COMMUNICATED WITH HIM AND THE ISSUE IS BEING RESOLVED AS WE SPEAK :bounce1:

Thank you so much. He had sent off the email before the age thing occurred to me.

I transitioned....understood :wiggle:

Check with each individual doctors office. My son is only 17. When he made his appointment he forgot to ask if I needed to come along because of his age. The doctors's office was 1.5 hours away so I went along and waited in the car just in case. My son had me sign the form before he went in and everything was fine. I wasn't needed. For the eye appointment he again forgot to ask but they called him back immediately. They told him he had to bring a parent due to his age. I went along when he checked in but it really didn't seem necessary.

That may vary by state and the practice policy. Great practice for your daughter to call and ask.

I went to the medical exam with my son. I did not go to the eye exam with him. NYS.

DS (17) had medical exam today. I signed the forms per the instructions, dropped him off, and planned to stay in the car. While my part was complete for DoDMERB... the office facility required my signature on two forms (medical consent for a minor and a COVID minor screening form.) The net/net: Call ahead (or better yet-- when scheduling the appointment, have you child ASK the office if parent/guardian is needed.)
