What is the best way for DS (2018 Appointee) to get his private pilot license while attending USAFA? I read somewhere on the forum (I have searched and can't find) that it is better to enter UPT with a PPL. If this is true, I want to help DS financially so he can get his license while at the Academy. It would be awesome to hear from all, especially some of the "veterans" (hornet, bullet, pima, fencersmother, stealth, dad, etc.).

^That, and if starting from scratch, it's going to be incredibly time consuming to even get close to getting a PPL. I wouldn't anticipate having that time freshman year.

You can also skip IFS by becoming a soaring IP which is at no extra cost and is definitely a manageable time commitment that many cadets undertake.

Why is it so many questions seem to put the cart in front of the horse. Your son has not even gotten to the academy yet and your thinking about UPT.

As a former manager of a flying school, I can tell you the hardest way to acquire a PPL is to attempt it in little dribs and drabs spread out over a long period of time. Flying is a perishable skill for a new person and the start-and-stop method requires you to constantly "get back up to speed" every time you get into an aircraft. Admittedly, this is age dependent as the younger you are the easier it is but it is still the worst way to learn.

There is a good reason that once someone enters a military flight school, they are kept flying constantly until they earn their wings.
