So many of you are lonesome for your midshipman, or can hardly wait until they get home. Many of you have your son or daughter out to sea during the holidays and you are finding it hard.

I propose that we all perk up by celebrating together drinking Hot Mulled Cider on Thursday during Cookie Cafe when the students at KP will be smelling and drinking this. The recipe is on the www.kpcookiecafe.com website but I have copied it here.

All across US families can enjoy a hot cup of cider together as we smile thinking about our kids. Please join us.

MOM GUEST'S HOT MULLED CIDER (from The Old Country Store, in PA)
(Christmas Party for Cookie Cafe)
3 whole cinnamon sticks
4 1⁄2 teaspoons whole cloves
½ teaspoon salt
Combine above three items in a large tea ball or cheesecloth closed with a rubber band (or dump them in and fish them out,or strain them out, in half an hour).
9 cups pineapple juice
9 cups cranberry juice (not cranberry cocktail juice)
4 ½ cups water
1/3 cup brown sugar

-Mix all together in a pan , put spices in, turn up heat until very hot, then turn down to a simmer. Leave spices in for 1⁄2 hour, NO MORE , or the cider becomes bitter.

I pour the cider into a crockpot on low and let it go forever (the aroma is wonderful).

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Cookie Cafe and MOM Guest

Thank you Mom Guest

You always seem to sense the needs of both mids and parents. I am having a difficult time missing my DS who is at sea right now. He had his 19th birthday this week somewhere in the middle of the ocean and I hope someone on board celebrated with him. We sent cards along with him when he left, but I had hoped he could at least email us. It's been awhile since we heard from him. We got our Christmas tree last night without him, and it just didn't seem right. I remember during Indoc when parents of older mids said Indoc was the easy part, and now I know what they meant! I will use your recipe, try to stop worrying, and celebrate on Thursday. Thanks for all you do!

What an absolutely wonderful idea! Thanks for the recipe and the suggestion....... and mostly for bringing a little bit of "home" to so many students so far from home. You may see how much the students appreciate you firsthand, but you can't possibly know how much the parents appreciate you. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!

cookiecafemom: So will this taste as good as I think it will with some apple schnapps added to the recipe?

I can envision the teasing look on your face as you wrote that

You are funny! NO it will not taste as good!

For one thing we are all keeping our faculties fully alert so we can think clearly about our mids in this time of remembering together.

Secondly, this cider is made with pineapple and cranberry, unusal two juices together, we don't want to mess it up with apple!

Thirdly, liquor is a problem on campus and we are going to stay far away from that area.

So, I know you are just being funny, but I have given you a motherly answer. This Hot Mulled Cider does not need any embellishment. Try it and you will see.

Liquor is a problem on campus? Oh yeah, it is a college campus isn't it! I thought is sidestepped those worries with this kid! My other senior is going to Indiana University next year, should I buy him a case of aka-seltzer for Xmas now? Oh right, that should be for me and the hubby!:shake:

The Cider sounds wonderful and we will participate with all even though it is a year early.

Today is the day that we drink Hot Mulled Cider together

It's 6am, the van is packed to the ceiling with cookie boxes, we are showered and ready to go. A quick stop at Dunkin Donuts for an eggwhite flatbread and a cup of coffee, then off to Kings Point. We will arrive at 7am to begin to unpack the van, open boxes, get out all our supplies, signs, flag, turn on the oven and get ready. It will take until 11:30am to have everything ready.

I am excited. We have gingerbread house kits, porcelin snowflakes for the students to decorate for tree ornaments, cookie dough to cut out, decorate and bake, DJ with lots of Holiday music to sing, and our Hot Mulled Cider, which you are going to drink along with us. Of course we have hundreds and hundreds of dozens of your wonderful homebaked cookies you sent.

Thank you all for being a team player with us in making Cookie Cafe happen. The midshipmen all say "Thank you" It is a great morale booster for them.

Thank you Cookiecafemom!

You are just wonderful! I am excited for you and the KP community. You are such a blessing to this Academy. I know your efforts are so appreciated. When these students look back in years to come, you, your service, and certainly this day must stand out as very special. Here's a cup of mulled cider lifted in toast, "Thank you"! :beer1:

Thank you so much for all you do! My DD was not able to make it today but cookies made it to the drill team practice and I am so thankful as they had some of the cookies I sent up. We are all blessed to have you there and we really appreciate everything you do! Merry Christmas!!

Holiday Cookie Cafe was an absolute hit

Our Cookie Cafe could not have been better! There were 466 students who showed up and it was a hit. Many students, mostly fellows, took skippy colored pens and decorated the porcelin snowflakes for girlfriends, sisters and Moms. The gingerbread houses were beautifully put together. Cookies were baked and decorated.

A parent very generously donated the cost of Kareoke. I called the Kareoke DJ to let him know how to get in the front gate. I then laid down my perimeters: No coarse language, No dirty jokes, No swearing. You would think that I just took away all the "fun" but the students couldn't have enjoyed themselves more. I discovered the amazing talents a number of the midshipmen have!!

I hope that your Hot Mulled Cider was as good as ours. I hope you enjoyed having a cup of cider with all of us, and it made you feel closer. Though we had the advantage of eating wonderful homemade cookies from Florida to go with our cider.

Anyone need a delicious homemade eggnog recipe? I have it.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

If you want to see how much fun the mids had yesterday singing, decorating gingerbread houses and painting ornaments, go check out the pictures at:

Between Cookie Cafe yesterday and the Holiday Party on Wednesday night, where almost the entire regiment showed up for great food, presents and wonderful decorations, KP might lose the designation:

"Where fun goes to die".

The parents and the Guests who make all this happen to raise the morale of the mids do an unbelievable job with one idea in mind: to help the students at Kings Point!! The the mids were very grateful for everyone's effort.:thumb:
