Hello, I recently took the ACT and multiple choice scores came out this morning. My total score isn’t great but the section scores are alright. 31 combined, 34 math, 33 for both language sections, and only 25 for science. I know the issue with science was that I didn’t have enough time to finish.
Would it be worth retaking the ACT to score higher? -I have also taken the SAT w/ 1470 total, 770 math, and 700 for English. I understand that service academies hold very high academic standards and I want to give myself the best shot.

Yes it is absolutely worth retaking. 25 is kind of low for the science section. Others can correct me if I am wrong but I believe USMA superscores so if you do better they will see it.

I’d take it again. You could get yourself up to a 33 or 34 if you manage to bring up you’re science.

The first time I took the ACT I got about the same as you and I think a 31 composite. My science was maybe a 26. After taking it two more times, I managed to get it up to a 32 and a 33 or 34 composite.

My advice for the science section is to really not read the passages. Read the summary to get a grip on the experiment, then look straight at the questions. Most of the answers are in the tables. That’s what I did going from the first test to the second test and I ended up with extra time.

Since either SAT or ACT is accepted I would stick with the SAT. Some people are just naturally better suited to one test or the other. Your SAT score is outstanding!

I agree with @militarymomcpg .

If you were only going to take ONE more test, i'd opt for the SAT. If you are looking at April, June, July, Aug, Sept 2019, then i'd take both.

To get a comparable score, you'd have to make a 32.5 to round up to 33 composite. That means moving from 25 to 30 in science. But even if you scored a whopping 33 on the science - that's the dreaded "25" or 33.25, still a 33. To get a single sitting of 34, you have to score a 34 AND replicate what you did on the other tests (E33 M34 R33).

Since already have a really good 1470 via ERW 700 and M 770, I would go with the SAT for the ERW score. Most civilian Plan B non-state colleges will superscore the SAT, but not as often the ACT. You only have to improve to a 730 from a 700 to get the elusive 1500 superscore or single sitting if you can replicate the M770. Go for the home run! Work on the ERW!

Someone please check; I myself am confused about the writing portions for USMA. DD says ACT requires the writing portion, but does that mean for EVERY sitting? Or just that you have to have at least one ACT with writing, and the others can be without? Does it require an SAT writing section? Or am I confusing that with "Reading and Writing" score?

Math and English still carry a higher weight. USMA superscores so 33 and 34 in Math and English never go away. I would study and prep for just the Science part and figure out how to make it match your other scores.

As for most other schools they only take the highest sitting. In that situation I would use the SAT scores.

The essay (writing portion) has to have been taken at least once so if you were happy with your essay score the first time, you aren’t required to take the essay again if you took the SAT/ACT again. However, you have to stay within the same test, in other words, USMA doesn’t super score between tests so if you wanted to submit SAT and ACT scores you would have to take the essay for both tests.
