ACT/SAT STRATEGY - TO SUPER SCORE OR NOT

Does USNA still superDUPERscore, your best from either SAT/ACT? If so, how does that change your strategy, if at all?

Then do you still need a better single sitting for any applications - State U and/or ROTC?

What does your BGO/ALO/FFR, USCGA & USMMA admissions rep say? My DD's all said specifically NOT to test again, and just get that application in!. She "only" had a 1450 (730/720) and 34 (rounded up 36 31 36 31).

What is your strategy if he is NMF from his PSAT? Are you looking at places that offer full scholarship/tuition and the red carpet to NMFs?

Regarding free vs. paying for SAT/ACT: You do you. MANY ways to look at it, and you have to figure out what makes the most sense for YOU. For example, you KNOW academics is 50-60% of the application. I am darn proud of the $7,000 I paid for both DDs at Huntingdon for ACT prep. But it, as well as her whole package, earned her 4 LOAs. So that $7k for 2 DDs? Totally worth it.

I'm not sure I follow everything you're asking but I'll try to answer.

We have been told the USNA does SuperScore . It is my belief that the USNA does superscore between tests and converts the results. I believe the USAFA only superscores between the same test. OP asked for opinions on strategy - Should he take one test and focus on the reading section, and one only focusing on the math. Truly, I don't know that he'd be able to let a section go, but just knowing in your mind that you don't need to stress about it can ease the pressure. Popular opinion here has been to practice and take the test as a whole seriously. So no, I guess that doesn't change his strategy.

Then do you still need a better single sitting for any applications - State U and/or ROTC?
DS just started researching NROTC as an option last fall and we are still not entirely sure the pre college prep that needs to be done. His top college picks have a mixture of accepting a superscore, no test score required and needing a high single test score. So Yes and No.

IDK.
He is just a junior and in the beginning of the process. He only recently filled out a prelim. application so I don't think he has been in contact much with any of the reps other than the BGO at an event last fall. He took the SAT and ACT in the first half of his junior year so I find it hard to believe that anyone would advise not to try at least once more before the January deadline.

What is your strategy if he is NMF from his PSAT? Are you looking at places that offer full scholarship/tuition and the red carpet to NMFs?
Again, pretty early to speculate. Hopefully he will be a finalist but it could be a mute point if he has an offer of appointment to a SA. He is looking at places that offer his field of interest and NROTC options. He'll have to wait and see what the offers are.

You do you? I have payed for every test he has signed up for but even if I hadn't this seems very aggressive not every family has the luxury to afford the extras. It is nice that you were able to shell out 7K for your DDs. That's awesome. If I had the means, I probably would too. I simply do not. As others have stated, there are free options online. I am a single parent, I manage fine but as mentioned private tutoring is just not in my budget. My son completed his CVW, flying out on his own dime. He is an athlete, a volunteer, has held a job, while taking advanced classes and maintaining a 4.0uw (4.4 weighted) He'll be fine wherever he lands but being able to complete a few more questions on ACT will help.

This brings up another point, ask what is available, some schools/specific circumstances there are waivers available. My DDs public school being Title I/100% free lunch, they got great resources for all students. DD's school hired Princeton review and they signed up for a few summer sessions, which weren't that helpful. DDs got free AP testing, so 36 exams x $97 savings, plus their school district paid $100 for 3+ on Sci, Math, and Comp Sci for several years, SAT/ACT/subject test waivers, and being in the know, waited for emails for waived application fees at several TX schools. They went to the same campus but different schools, so each school had slightly different benefits; one DD got up to 6 free SAT subject tests, the other did not. Are fly-ins still a thing? My older DD applied to various flyout and got an all expenses paid 3 day flyout to Davidson. She also got $400 voucher to Reed and $200 to ASU plus overnight. Not SA related, but something to consider for civilian schools.
