Hello everyone,

I am new to this board, but so far have found it to be full of great information. Upon graduation from the USNA are you able to choose what field you would like to go in such as Marine Corps, Naval Aviation, Submarine Force, Special Ops, and Surface Warfare? Or does the USNA assign you to a specific field. What is the five years of active duty like for a naval officer?

Thanks,

In the fall of your first class year you put in three preferences in a 1st, 2nd, 3rd fashion.

Grades, potential for an officer, how you do during the summer programs, physical fitness... blah blah blah are all taken into account.

Thats just how it works to the best of my knowledge. Anyone else could probably give a more detailed answer than I.

Actually you put in more than three preferences - but you have to interview with your top three. You take aptitude tests, pre-commissioning physicals - which can DQ you from certain things - most likely Aviation. Your aptitude tests and interviews play into what you can choose. The actual service selection is done on Order of Merit although the past few years those at the top and in technical fields have bee drafted for certain service branches - mostly subs. You are never guaranteed your first choice although most do get it.

Thank you for your replies. Most likely I would be selected for one of my top three preferences such as aviation, submarines, and surface warfare. Can anyone tell me anything about the length of a tour or what leave is like?

Thanks,
