Active Duty Chances

It's not odd for the current job climate. I have met so many MSIII cadets that are so desperate for AD that they are looking for any affirmation available. Many of them majored in areas that aren't too hot in the job market right now and I can see where their trepidation comes from.

My surprise mainly originates from their lack of confidence in themselves to make it in the civilian world (if forced branched). It almost seems like AD is a crutch or job handout to become successful and make steady pay rather than an actual career aspiration. I mean 99% of the US (real rough figure), gets by somehow and getting forced branched isn't the end of the world.

As an aside there also seems to be some confusing regarding OML and future success as an officer (at least in my batt). I have seen complete dirtbags in the top of then OML and new LTs in the bottom of AD who I believe will make excellent officers. OML is just a tool for accessions, nothing else.

Really good post

Of course I had counseling with the cadre at my university and I've asked my share of questions BUT the answer to me haven't been straight forward and I figure that I could def. get straight answers here when I found this forum. Also there's a lot of experience floating around this forum....so that's why I asked. I don't need a pat on the back or anything of that nature.

I'm a prior service (E5) from the National Guard and I've been in for almost 6 years. I cme straight in as an MS3 and mostly what I've been hearing the whole year is that the cutoff line is going to make a drastically large jump this year. Of course I've asked them based off my current numbers where I may stand for active duty but again haven't really gotten straight forward answers.

Branches I'm interested in are #1 Med Services, #2 Engineering, and #3 Quartermaster. I plan on putting in an ADSO and Branch Detail...I've had my share of the Guard and want to go AD by any means and stay in until I'm forced out...

I haven't heard anything about an anticipated change in the cutoff. Where you hear that from? I think last year's was 76 or something, which is still a sizable jump from years prior. My GPA was lower than yours and class standing was just in the top 1/3rd. Every case is different, but for what it's worth I was told not to worry about making AD.

e: I'm sure you've studies the accessions briefs just as closely as I have. MS and EN are competitive, but QM is a good third to save you from the DABM.
e2: Now that my memory is jarred, the cadre at my school said to expect anyone with above a 3.0 and 270 apfts to have a shot at AD depending on camp scores.

Remember, Cadet Command does not just assign a cutoff number. The Army decides how many AD 2LT they need, they take that many, the last person on that list is now the cut off.

A couple years ago the last OMS number for AD was higher then the previous year but included a higher number of AD slots.

Think of it this way, if there were a list of 10 people and they were going to select 5, the last person on the list had a score of 76.2.

The following year they decided to take 6 people, but this year those six had higher scores and the last person's score was 81.2.

Some may see this as a rise in the cutoff number when in fact they actually took more people.

Trying to figure out a mythical cutoff number will just cause stress, it all depends on how everyone scores above you. Cutoff numbers hav also risen due to the fact they are now adding OMS points for certain STEM majors.

Just worry about what you can control.

cadetjohnson, unless you really tank LDAC I would bet you'll make AD, but that is just one person's opinion, but since you asked.

Keep in mind that MSC and EN are among the more competitive branches. Quartermaster is not.

When you return from LDAC your PMS will sit down with you to discuss your options. Your data will be entered into the Branch Expectation Tool (Fancy spreadsheet with lots of macros). It will explain your personal chances of receiving a particular branch through the accessions process, with and without ADSO.

Thanks for the info, Marist. Is other OML data on the FY 13 results for branching, DMG,. etc. publicly available?

The most recent data I have for top 10% is AVG GPA of 3.74. That is from a Fall 2012 Briefing. Not sure if this reflects FY13 or FY12 data.

Just curious? Why do you want MSC? I've never understood why it's so popular (except for 67J) and I am an AMEDD guy.

Well my enlisted MOS was a 68w and I like Medical all around. Until I go back to school for PT or OT, Med Services looks to be the closest Ill get to medical as an officer.

I thought about Ed Delay to continue straight into PT or OT school but I really want to go ahead and get some active time under my belt...

I know MSC and EN are both competitive. If I don't get those I really don't mind what I get as long as it is active duty and not infantry! I plan on making a career out of the military and figure I'd have time at some point to change jobs...

not infantry!

Haha, I think the older and wiser you get the more this becomes a hard rule. As far as putting off specialized schooling, I'd be careful about that. You never know if you'll get the opportunity down the road.

I would just do Ed Delay. MSC is not glamorous at all and is more admin than medical.

What are my chances

I received a 76.4 on my OMS and Green to gold non scholarship. What are my chances for active duty on my OMS score alone and does GTG Non scholarship even matter?

The cutoff last year was around 76. There's no telling what it will be this year until it is released in November. No, being non scholarship Green to Gold won't help you there. The only ones required to go back to AD are active duty option G2G.

The cut off last year was 75.15 but can change this year depending on the number Of AD 2LTs Allocations and scores of your peers. I would say if you have less than an 80 OMS you should be preparing for plan B.
