I am a current active duty soldier. On July 28th I received my LOA for a direct appointment to USMA for class of 2025. Does anyone have any insight on how the transition works from active duty to cadet? Is it the same as a kid coming out of high school? Any pointers or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

While waiting for others with better info to pop up, just to make sure you know who one of your key POCs is, if you don’t know already:

It’s the military. Admin and orders will be involved to detach you from one place, physically move you, and direct you to report in as a cadet, once you have fulfilled any conditions required by the LOA and have an appointment in hand.

One thing to get started thinking about now - your “stuff.” You’ll get a checklist to report in with, and that’s it. You’ll have to figure out what to do with your civvies, personal belongings, etc., and also your car, if you have one, since you can’t have it at USMA for some time. You may even want to sell it when it gets close to time to report, have cash to stow away, eliminate auto insurance costs and the headache of where/with whom to leave it. I don’t know whether your orders give you storage or a HHG move to, say, a relative’s house.

With luck, some of the prior enlisted folks or their parents will pop up with specific advice and experience.

And CONGRATULATIONS!

PAYNETRAIN - The most accurate.current info you can receive is from your Admissions Regional Commander in WP Admissions. :wiggle:

As Capt MJ wrote, you may want to "downsize" before reporting. My DDs car was paid off, so she chose to have us lease it from her for her first 2.5 years. That way she will start out as an LT without a car payment. But she sold her TV, game station... etc.
I don't know if you are or will be deployed, but our DD had issues with her rear detachment letting her out process as she came back early from a deployment to report. It took CSMs getting involved for the logjam to get broken. It is rare, but if you run into issues with your COC bump things up as needed. As it is she signed out on Thursday to report for R-Day the following Monday. She had to sell back a bunch of leave.
Which brings up a good point. You will either have to use or sell back your leave as you can't keep it at West Point.
Probably the biggest advice she would probably give (she stays off most social media), it to understand that West Point is not the same as the Army. The mission is to produce officers. At times, things may not seem to make sense at first. But they do as time passes.
There were times during my DDs Plebe year when I thought there would be a cloud of dust out the Thayer Gate as she left. But she came to realize that the training was not just about her, it was about training her classmates as well. Those upperclassmen with red sashes who will greet you are learning to be leaders. They will probably make mistakes. Be patient. Remember, it's not all about you but about them as well. Your prior service will help your fellow new cadets/plebes. But be humble about it. Eventually, you will be put in leadership positions.
My DD has gotten to the point where she may not love West Point but she definitely appreciates it.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.
