Additional Nomination Sources

After applying for a vice presidential nomination, does anyone know when candidates will be notified if they have received a nomination or not? or maybe even received a sup's nomination?

Those are usually expected to appear charged later in the cycle (ie: for candidates who have no other nom source). The deadline for MOC slates is the end of January, and then admissions can finalize their “puzzle” after having all the pieces (slates).

It’s a marathon. A long process. You need to be prepared to wait. USNA has a goal of mid April to notify their applicants. So that’s your benchmark. Notification before then is a bonus! And it can dag on beyond that, if you consider the waitlist. My oldest was appointed early December, youngest late May...almost 6 months apart. But to you question, it makes sense that Supe/VP noms are used for people they cannot charge elsewhere kind of thing. So it’s not early in the process.

You should know by April. Good luck!

Saw your earlier post that you have an LOA but no Nom. Yes, Supe/VP spots are for those USNA wants but can't charge another Nom -- I don't have any actual knowledge, but I would suggest that USNA isn't going to play that card until they see the entire pool of candidates they have to choose from. What that means is be patient...it could be a long wait (or if quick, a pleasant surprise).

To pass the time, go find the appointment threads for previous years. Look at dates of list updates by the latest poster, examine date posted vs type of noms listed

....and add a month or so. (The historical information may be useful to tell the relative timing, but my completely unofficial prediction is this year the Appointments will be skewed to the right (ie. later in the cycle). Be patient.

I just talked with my admissions counselor and it just so happens that my Senior Army JROTC instructor can nominate me to the Academy because my school is a honor unit of distinction! I also talked to my instructor and we will be sending in the nomination as soon as it is filled out!

Not sure that the JROTC nominations can cross party lines , Army JROTC not the same as Navy/Marine Corps JROTC when applying to USNA. Might want to check on that.

Respectfully, the honor unit designation is key - tucked into the description of this type of nom is this phrase:
All Army and Air Force JROTC units designated as Honor Units with Distinction are eligible to nominate three candidates. Army and Air Force units must submit a copy of their order along with the nominated.

That was also my understanding until I talked to my admissions counselor to make sure. I was extremely luck to find out that my JROTC unit at my school is a honor unit with distinction!

First, as someone that has been thru the process as an SA applicant (grad date measured in decades not yrs) and as a parent of an SA applicant (DS now a recent grad) and now again as a parent of an applicant (younger DS), I am always amazed at the insight and how much I learn from this forum. But this is very interesting. After reviewing the info on the USNA site, the form reads as "ROTC Nomination to USNA" but the purpose of the form is to "Recommend ROTC candidates for nomination to USNA." I guess I am a little confused. It appears this is not an official nomination, at least not yet. Those with this recommendation to nominate now compete with the other JROTC "recommended noms" to earn the actual nomination or, more precisely, the admissions board determines which candidates get the nom and subsequent appointment. Is this correct?

Working backwards, the SA chooses which candidates will get offers of appointment charged to this source, up to the cap per class. I do think everyone who supplies the docs for this gets it reflected in their portal, as, similar to the Presidential and other service-connected noms, the SA manages them, validates them, and adds them to the candidate file. I think of the form for these noms as a “nomination for a nom controlled by SA” form.

I received the JROTC nomination through my Air Force JROTC unit, an honor unit w/ distinction. It IS an official nom.
