Hey everyone,

I’m sorry in advance for this extremely long post…

Being accepted into the Naval Academy has been a dream of mine since 6th grade and I am now a senior in high school trying to turn that dream into a reality (sounds cheesy, doesn’t it? but it's the truth). Anyway, my current college counselor is very kind, but she admitted she has never worked with a student who has applied to a service academy before, so that’s not a lot of help. My parents are supportive of me, but they are just as clueless as I am about this whole thing. So, I decided to register on this board and ask for help because I desperately need it. From what I've read, most of you have had experience with the USNA admissions process, so anything you can help me with would be much appreciated.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- I am currently awaiting a nomination from my representative (hopefully that works out)
- last week I sent in my ACT/SAT scores
- this week I'm asking my counselor to send in my official high school transcript
- in early November I submitted my "Preliminary Application" online.

Today I finally received my first letter in the mail from Annapolis informing me I have "been assigned a candidate number for admission". I received my BGO’s number and I’m going to call him for the first time this Thursday to schedule an interview. I went online and saw all the information I have to submit, and I thought it looked simple enough, until I read many things (on boards such as this one) that completely threw me for a loop, such as:
- What is a "MOC interview"? I thought I only had to have an interview with my BGO?
- What exactly is a “Regional Director”?
- I don’t have to schedule an appointment for a medical examination by the DoDMERB; they contact me, right?
- What does “3Q'ed” mean?
- This might be a stupid question, but after I submit everything online for the “USNA Candidate Information” packet, I just have to wait for either a rejection or an acceptance letter, right? Or are there more steps I am unaware of after submitting everything online?
- I guess this is the most pertinent question: it’s not too late is it? I realize I started this process much later than others, and now I’m starting to worry…

I’m sure I will think of more questions later, so be prepared!

I am interested in Annapolis because I want to serve my country all the while earning my degree at one of the nation’s most paramount institutions. However, for some reason I feel like I’m walking into this situation blind (especially since I was unable to attend the “Summer Seminar”). Any information you can offer would be great! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

OK Point by Point

First Get a hold of your BGO and he/she will make this easier. but til then here we go.
MOC is Member of Congress. This is your representative and you 2 state senators. Apply to all sources. This includes the Vice President of the United States. You will have an interview with each of the MOC's offices most likely a board or person that works for the MOC.
Your Regional director is your point of contact at admissions. They will help with items you cannot do yourself.
3Q'd means qualified 3 ways, scholastically, medically, and physically(your candidate fitness assessment).

Good luck and that should help. also keep taking the act/sat as many times as offered, and keep up the grades.

Anastasia,

Read everything you can from Admissions. You should have something that explains the entire process and what you still have to do.

If you haven't taken the CFA yet, practice the individual events and then practice the entire test. Then get it scheduled.

The idea of retaking the ACT/SAT to earn higher scores is a good one. You want to do everything possible to enhance your profile.

Very important: Make sure you excel in your 7th semester grades. And then again for your last semester. No senioritis allowed!

Good luck!!

Well Staci, you came to a very good place for help! No you are NOT too late!

Now that you have your candidate number you can sign on to the Candidate Information System (CIS). There you can see all of the part of the application you must complete.

Nomination - sounds like you applied to your Congressperson. Did you also apply to each US Senator? You can see if it isn't too late.

After you complete your application - keep updating your file with admissions. You will send in your 7th semester grades, any new SAT or ACT scores, any awards or honors you win. Don't be bashful - this is an ongoing process - if you have a significant accomplishment or win an award let admissions know - it will be added to your file.

It may seem overwhelming but just stay organized and ask if you have any questions!

One more suggestion - formulate a back up plan, apply for an NROTC scholarship. Think about what will you do if you don't get in this year? Go to college for a year and reapply?
Good Luck!

Once you have 50% of your admissions package completed your name will be sent to DoDMERB and you will be sent a scheduling card to get your physical examination scheduled. You can not schedule until DoDMERB has received your information from USNA.

Thanks so much for all the info...I really appreciate it!

My two senators are Barack Obama and Dick Durbin and unfortunately their deadlines occurred a lot sooner than I thought. However, I applied for a nomination from my Congresswoman Judy Biggert, and I'm just wondering, does everyone have to do a MOC Interview? Because all she asked for were my ACT scores, a one page statement on why I want to apply to a United States Service Academy, and a brief information packet.

Not from that area, but in our state, the Senators and Congressman do not do interviews. Each also have a different packet. Actually our congressman had not only the original (sim to yours), but then sent another which included 3 recs, a personal essay, transcripts, guidance counselor and sat's. This maybe what your moc is doing also.

Thanks for letting me know...i was just curious if anyone else didn't have to complete an interview.

our moc

Ours had a form to print and fill out, SAT's, transcript, 3 recs, counselor evaluation, list of EC's, picture, two essays and CFA! It was almost more involved then the academy application!

What's a "Letter of Assurance?" How did you get one so early?

An LOA is for highly competitive candidates (athletics or acadenics), the SA will notify you of an LOA, you cannot apply for 1

In all honesty, you are behind the 8-ball, time-wise. Not sure you can complete all the requirements by the deadline, but you can certainly give it a try.

MOC = Member of Congress = Senators and Representatives. Most have citizens' committees who conduct interviews. Some don't require interviews. Deadlines for nomination packets can be very early and, usually, MOCs won't budge on those deadlines.

Not sure re "Regional Director." It may refer to the person from Candidate Guidance assigned to your region.

"3 Q'ed" means that you are qualified academically, medically, and physically (CFA). Being triple Q'ed definitely helps secure an appointment, but is no guarantee.

More or less you submit your packet and wait. You are waiting for 3 things: notification that you are triple qualified; notification that you have received a nomination; and, finally, notification that you have received an appointment.

As for whether it's too late . . . you are definitely pushing the deadlines. Some are up on Jan. 31. This may include teacher recommendations (I honestly don't recall). I can promise that, if you miss deadlines, your odds for an appointment decrease dramatically.

However, if you are really committed to USNA and this year doesn't work out for you, go to a civilian college and reapply. Over 35% of plebes have had some post-high school education, so you won't be alone.

Good luck!
