I am a currently a junior in high school and I want to increase my chances for admission. I have a 3.8 GPA and have taken Chemistry and Physics Honors. I am planning to take AP Calculus and AP Chemistry next year. I run varsity indoor/outdoor and cross country track for my school for 3 years, play ice hockey in a private elite club for since I was 9. I am currently a Star Scout and I plan to Eagle rank in Boy Scouts before my graduation. In my troop, I'm a guide for younger scouts. I will start to volunteer in a hospital in October for 4 hours per week in consecutive 10 months. This summer I will work at summer camp as a counselor. I was in my school's band in the 1st section at 9th grade and will resume in 12th grade.

For my CPA Exam, I have a 40-42-46 for my basketball throw, 4.8 for my shuttle run, 33 for push-ups, 2 pull-ups, 50 sit-ups and a 5.40 mile.

With all of these in mind, do you know how I can still increase my admission chances to get in?

Thank you

Work on your SAT/ACT scores, a very important factor in admission. Also, work on leadership roles and be able to articulate how you make a difference as a leader. Good luck!

I did one SAT in June, waiting for the result in July. I feel better than my first test and hope having a better score.
For leadership, now I feel it's my weakness. But I did a lot of supports and assistances to my troops and sport teams, and I believe I showed my leadership role at our activities, without a title. How can I demonstrate it, by essay?

You have an outstanding resumé but I would work on the strength aspects of the CFA. Try to aim for 5 pull-ups and 50 push-ups. Good luck on your applications!!!

Thank you all of your advice. I went through some posts. After reading many posts, I start to feel harder than what I thought to get in. I should have prepared it earlier. Anyway, never be late.

I got in with 40 push, max sit, 14 pull ups, 6:36 run, 81-foot basketball, and 8.1 shuttle

but I know that there were a lot of people that outscored me. It sucks when there are no minimums published.

You're good. They say CFA is only fail or pass, no matter whether we reach the max or just pass.

Finishing your Eagle will demonstrate leadership but you are running out of time. There is a mandatory 6 month period (which must include a leadership position) between Life and Eagle and you can't start on your Eagle project until your proposal has been approved after becoming a Life Scout. Make sure you don't waste any time. Keep in mind that your 18th birthday can shorten the timeframe as well. I've seen scouts age out before completion needing only a merit badge or paperwork submission. Did you start scouts late? If so, it could be a good essay topic on orgainzation and leadership, I imagine.

You have a very good point. I started scouts at 11 years old, but didn't pay attention on ranking. I was joining the camps, learning skills, attending scout activities as many as I could. I only realized the importance of ranking and leadership after 2-3 years. So I really started my ranks in last two years.

Your CFA scores are looking so much better than mine. For my previous CFA's, I only got 48ft for the basketball throw, 13 pull ups, 9.8 for the shuttle run, 37 push ups, 67 sit-ups, and 7:22 run. You are doing very well man. Keep improving. I hope to be able to reach where you are soon.

Just curious was that score passing? I’m just trying to get an idea of what sort of scores I’ll need on the CFA

I don't know cause the scores feel like they constantly change. The first time I took my CFA (senior year of highschool) I passed with scores nearly identical to what I have posted here. The second time I took it (freshman year of college) the scores were also very similar to what I posted but they marked it as a fail. In short, just do your best to get as close to the max scores as possible.

Ah I see, thanks!

4.8 for your shuttle run sounds off… Are you sure you are doing it correctly?

Application is weighted 60% Academic, 30% Leadership, 10% CFA. Your CFA does impact your score, but not as much as raising your SAT score, and the best way to do that is to increase your math portion. For leadership, you have some items that you can point to, such as camp counselor; Ask to be team Captain for hockey. Are you just earning Eagle scout, or are you actually leading with it? There's a big difference. Don't just gather accolades but actually apply them, and be a leader in them. Debate or speech is also helpful, as leaders should be decent speakers. But the top thing to improve chances, which I have been told by an admissions liaison officer, is to attend Boys / Girls State. Also, begin looking at who will write your recommendation letters. Very important.

Thank you, those are good points.

I improved my Math from my 2nd test, will focus on English while preparing 3rd test.

For leadership, I know that's my weakness. Pandemic delays my scout rank. I can get an Eagle next Spring, but it's after application deadline. It's under impression that the determination of leadership is based on the title from the application. However, I think the most importance of a leadership is the impact. I plan to write about it in my essay, which I will do after I finish this summer work.

For teachers' recommendation, USMMA requires Math, English, and Science teachers' evaluation. Mine is completed and I hope what my teachers wrote is good for me. I'm not sure about other academic records, school profile, or school activity provided by my guidance counselor, how they will be.

If you have a realistic and achievable path to Eagle (e.g. you are a Life Scout, have only 3 or 4 badges to finish, have your Eagle Project Plan approved), then you can talk about that in your: resume, essays and interviews. The senior ranks (First Class and above) all have aspects of leadership requirements built into them. Describe those activities and what you learned from them. You dont have to be the Senior Patrol Leader. Eagle involves a lot of leading: to subordinates and peers. If you Trail to Eagle is not realistic-then focus on what you've learned. It's OK to talk about the impact of COVID on your Eagle Trail...but explain how you are not letting it stop you. If your that close to Eagle-get it done!
