Admissions Board Process

Highly Qualified

"Highly qualified candidate" is often quoted from letters and comments from those who are part of the process. As far as reality is concerned, all of you young people who are even qualified as candidates should consider yourselves highly qualified. Your willingness to make this type of commitment to your country is admirable and is indicative of the type of people you are. Best of luck to each and every one of you. There is always room for good leadership and there are many paths to finding yourself in a leadership role. Always have a plan B.

I'll throw my story in here:

I applied to NASS, and I didn't get in. A week or two after my rejection letter I received a CVW letter.

After I attended SS at USAFA I found the AF was for me.

My BGO sent me a couple of notices to complete my USNA file, for everything was empty. He personally called my home and asked for my "story".
I told him that I was no longer interested in USNA. Emails were sent by me to my BGO, Regional Director, and Admissions to close my file.
This was done in a couple weeks ago, yet I just recieved another letter for a CVW.

I seriously doubt I am "highly" qualified, but just qualified. Since my USNA file is empty with no forms completed, the only data they have is from my NASS application.

The reality of this process - applying to USNA or any of the SAs, for that matter - is that applicants, candidates, and families are usually looking for certainty. Or, at the very least, minimizing uncertainties.

Until you received the fat portfolio or TWE, there will seem to be almost no method to the madness. Your DD will get an LOA but your friend's son, equally "highly qualified," will not. Some LOA holders will not make triple-Q'd. Some candidates will finish their packets now and not hear anything until November or March. It will drive many candidates, parents, aunts, uncles, friends, and BGOs a little crazy.

There have been and will be a good number of "How do I look?" postings on this and other boards. Truth is, none of us are on an admission board, though some have greater involvement in the process. We can't tell you, for sure. There may or may not be some factor that remediates your 600 math SAT, for example.

Which is all sort of a long way to say, stop worrying about what the distinction between "qualified" and "highly qualified" is. Who knows why USNA chose that adjective for that person in that letter? Maybe she broke a state track record, or he shot a 790 on the math SAT. Don't try to "figure out" the hidden meaning behind DoDMERB status updates. If you're unsatisfied with your SATs, take it again. Do your best on the CFA. Follow up, assertively but politely and professionally, with your BGO if you haven't had your interview or if her/his report status is still pending. Handle DoDMERB remedials with all due speed. Control what you can control, make your packet the best it can be, and trust others and the process from there.

The Admissions Board assigns a score, called variously on this forum WPS (Whole Person Score) and WCS (Whole Candidate Score).
The CGO actually tallies up the WPS prior to the record going before the board. Any points added or deducted by the board are called RABs(Recommendations of the Admissions Board).

I do not believe Admissions would review an app that lacked BGO interview.
In the past year or so there has been a renewed effort by the CGO to not allow a record to be held up for lack of an interview. They have stated that they will not hold up a record if the only item lacking is the interview. There also seems to be a push to inform BGOs, via their ACs, that interviews are due.

Convesely, I cannot imagine a record, except for perhaps a very very few outstanding early LOAs, going before the board without a completed CFA.

Hey, I'm a bit new to the whole admissions process..
I received a CVW; all it is a visitation weekend. Does it hold a lot of wieght if you attend it?
I'm just waiting not-so-patiently for a LOA.. my file is 100% complete, and my MOCs do not hold interviews until OCT. (Orlando, FL)
Any tips, or things to do during the wait?

I have had my application complete, with exception of interview and medical exam, since mid August. I attended NASS, so my CFA is done as well. How do I know if my application has been reviewed or not?

I spoke with my BGO; he told me that there is no way to know when the board reviews your packet.
However, I did hear from other people that DoDMERB has your status when the board reviews your packet, or sends you an LOA

Since people are starting to get CVW invites, I was wondering if your application had to be 100% complete to get one?

Got my invite in the mail on Friday. So I'm guessing at the time they sent it, the things I had missing from my file were CFA, interview, and medical. That said, my BGO interview write-up was complete as of Friday morning.

If you don't receive an LOA in the mail within a week or so after your application is reviewed, does that mean that you will not get an LOA?

I think LOA can be given out at any time. My older brother received LOA in October last year (the 23rd to be exact).
