Hi. My daughter is applying EA. She was contacted by admissions that they would like to schedule an interview with her and would be in touch within 21 days to do so. A few questions...does this mean she has gotten to the point in the application where the first two people who reviewed her application have given her a thumbs up? Does it mean anyone else has reviewed her application yet? Lastly, any tips on the interview process or insight on what to expect? Thanks in advance.

I'm not super sure about whether the process varies from year to year, but my son, a current 4/C who applied EA last cycle, got an email on 10/30/2020 asking him to participate in an Admissions interview and stating he'd be contacted to schedule that within 30 days. Then, on 11/13/2020, he got another email stating that his record was scheduled for review for Early Action and would be forwarded to the Candidate Evaluation Board in the next two weeks. I believe this second email signified when his file was submitted for final review. I don't remember when his interview actually occurred. My son was notified of his appointment on 12/7/2020. If your daughter has only gotten the interview email at this point, I would guess that no, she has not yet gone through the first review yet.

I received the same email today, it stated I would be contacted for a interview within the next 21 days. I’m not sure what it all mean either.

From the CGA Website Admissions page: Admissions may request to interview applicants and prospective applicants in order to best meet your needs and the Academy's enrollment goals. If so, a representative of Admissions will contact you. If selected for an interview, participation is required. The format of the interview - online, by phone, or face-to-face - will be based on the mutual consent of all parties, with health and safety the paramount concern.
The purpose of an interview is to try and find out more about the candidate (beyond what is in the application) and give the candidate an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the Academy.

The selection process for interviews regarding the CGA is relatively obscure, they don't necessarily give a specific reason as to why they choose certain cadet candidates for an interview. That being said, it's definitely safe to say that if your daughter IS chosen for an interview, the Coast Guard Academy is showing interest in her application: AKA a good sign.

Also, just to give my personal experience: This is the 3rd application cycle I will be going through. My senior year of high school, I did not receive an interview request and got denied. Last year, I had an interview with an Admissions partner and ended up getting waitlisted, but ultimately denied again. This year I received an interview request as well and I've already submitted my application for Early Action so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The point I am trying to make is that receiving an interview request is a GOOD sign, however, it does not mean an appointment is, by any means guaranteed.

Also: the interview questions are on the coast guard academy's website if you want to look at them prior; a quick google search will get you there. My biggest piece of advice though: make sure your daughter remains as organic as possible in her responses. It's much better to sound authentic than to sound rehearsed. The point of the interview is for CGA to get to know your daughter better (not to drill her knowledge on CGA, etc.); it's not a lengthy interview and it is not super formal. It is also good to have a few questions related to the academy prepped for the interviewer to answer after her interview, on both occasions when I was interviewed, the admissions partner was very welcoming to questions and comments after the conclusion of the interview.

Hope this helps!
