Next Saturday I got an email to attend a West Point information session with a number of cadets in attendance to just ask questions and stuff. My only question is what I should wear? In the email it mentioned at the bottom business formal attire, but does that seem excesive for a short 2 hour meet and greet?

You only get one opportunity to make a good first impression. The cadets will be uniform (likely dress gray or white over gray depending on where you are) and it would be appropriate for you to wear a similar level of dress If the invite says business formal go with a blazer and a tie. If you're over dressed you can ditch the coat or the tie. When in doubt always better to overdress vs. underdress. Take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions directly of the cadets.

Usually, when this question comes up,it's in response to an invitation that does not specify a dress code. This one's easy; they've told you what's expected. "Formal Business" may or may not be over the top for a meet and greet, but (1) that's what they've told you to do, (2) do you really want to be the only guy/girl there standing out because you haven't followed the dress code, and (3) if you want a Service Academy, it's a good idea to start getting comfortable dressing formally.

I went to one of these a few days ago and simply wore regular clothes. I actually left school early to get a few immunizations and have blood drawn for West Point. When I arrived, the 2LT speaking seemed quite pleased with my gray shorts and black U.S. Army t-shirt.

This is pretty simple, wear what they told you to wear. Whether it seems excessive or not, they gave you a dress code.
