Does anyone have the exact numbers/percentages of applicants throughout the entire process. Starting with the pre-candidate questionnaire and ending with appointments.

Not exact but they generally start with around 10,000 applicants and around 1,100 show up to Iday. That’s just a quick synopsis for you.

I can't find any similar reports for C/o 2023 on. Seems like they shifted to reporting some basic demographic stats in an article format.

I don't have exact stats as they fluctuate a little from year to year; however, typically USAFA will get ~10K applications (pre-candidate questionnaire completions) each year. Of those, ~8K will complete the application process.

From there the DoDMERB process, CFA, and Nomination requirements will reduce the pool to ~3-4K qualified candidates. USAFA will offer around 1400-1500 appointments each year to fill 1100-1175 slots.

Here is the actual info for the class of 2019 and 2021

What do they mean by "qualified candidate?"

Go through this site ... there is a good search feature. Even google will end up giving you the links to this site.

Read the pinned threads. Familiarize yourself with the acronym list on top.

A qualified candidate is one who is 3Q - academically, medically, and physically.

A qualified candidate is someone who has all the requirements met for an appointment - Academics, Medical, Physical and has a nomination.

Can 3q's be rejected, because I saw the offers of admission vs qualified candidates on the class profile and there was a huge gap? (sorry if this may sound dumb)

Unless I don’t understand ... offers of admissions are slightly higher than actual inductees (they plan for no shows, declining offers, etc).

Generally they give offers of admissions to about half of the actual qualified candidates.

There are a lot of great candidates that are qualified that don’t get offers. There are some qualified candidates that don’t get nominations.

Yes. Fully qualified candidates get rejected all the time. There are not enough spaces for all the qualified candidates. And based on our experience in the process so far (first year here) USAFA doesn't send 3Q letters or anything, so it's not explicitly communicated to a candidate if they are 3Q or not.

This is a competitive process - it's not about just being competitive...it's about being the MOST competitive.

I am wondering if appointments are offered to the “next in line” if the person ahead in line declines. We live in a competitive district and are friends with a family whose DS was already been offered an appointment to two SA’s including USAFA. He has also been admitted to some ivies and MIT (so you can guess his academic stats) and has said depending on scholarships he probably will not attend a SA. Great kid, crazy smart AND he is an athlete. They are not on SAF, I asked.

Does anyone know if they wait for a decline before moving down the list? I am guessing this is why there are some much later appointments.

Yes, I know there are a lot of wildcards...just wondering. Our DD is locking in on plan B but is still hopeful. She was told our MOC’s all collaborate and not everyone gets an interview/nomination but was surprised with both a Congressional and Senatorial nomination, so she knows she is competitive.

USAFA expects a certain number of appointments to be rejected for one reason or another. Those getting appointments late March-early April could be working on medical waivers and thus are not given the appointment until they have the waiver in hand. There is a National Wait List that is explained in the Nominations tab. To sum everything up, USAFA will generally not offer a new appointment when one is declined. Everyone will know their status by April 16 I believe whether that being in a TWE, appointment, or NWL. The “big dump” of appointments is expected within the next few weeks. Best of luck to your DD.

I just stumbled on to this (below) on the Academy Admissions page...what we were talking about above.

Late Selections

Some appointees do decline their appointment offers, and we select other qualified candidates to fill those vacancies. In such cases, we may not notify replacement candidates until shortly before the class enters.

Great information. Thank you.

If you don’t receive an offer of appointment from USAFA however you are still in the running for prep or the Falcon Foundation Scholarship, will you receive a TWE? Or will your portal continue to say “Candidate”.
