1) I know that with an ADSO you sign up for additional service to help get the branch you want. What are the best branches to ADSO for if you're an average cadet?

2) I know that Branch Detail also gets you your preferred branch in exchange for serving in another branch. What branches can you detail into?

3) Can you sign up for both an ADSO and a Branch Detail?

Branches that don’t need many junior officers will offer a branch detail. My daughter is interested in Military Intelligence and that is a branch where you can branch detail into one of the combat armss branches, who do need many junior officers. It helps guarantee getting MI as a branch after a few years and provides the Army with the junior officers they need. It also gives junior officers more direct leadership experience as many of the jobs they might have in MI will end up being behind a desk. As far as your other questions, I really don’t have any information to help, I only have this information because my daughter is a rising senior contemplating this path.

1) There are no "Best" branches to ADSO for, if you really want a particular branch and your worried you may not get it, then ADSO for that branch. Just realize that the extended service obligation will be 3 years no matter which branch you ADSO for except Aviation. Since Aviation has a 6 year obligation adding an ADSO only increases that obligation by one year.

2) Signing a form that states you are willing to do a branch detail does not increase your chances of getting that branch. The branch detail does allow more cadets to get a certain branch but just know that once you complete your detail you are very close to completing your first service obligation, so if you want to spend any time in the branch you had selected you will need to stay in the Army longer. MI, Signal, AG, Chem Corps are a few of the branches that can have a detail.

3) Yes you can sign for both.

One thing to remember is that if you sign an ADSO for a certain branch and when branching takes place you have a slot on the OML that allows you to get the branch without the ADSO, they will not charge you the ADSO.

I would strongly urge anyone considering ADSO speak to a current 1st Lt. before you ask for that option. Get educated and then make an informed decision.
