Advantages of going to the Coast Guard Academy versus the Navy Academy? difficult choice.

Here's how small it is....

I work at another federal agency now (totally unrelated to the military or maritime industry). I was in a training and an FBI special agent on detail to my agency was in our training. I asked him if he knew a few folks and he didn't and I found out how many special agents in the FBI there are (50,000+). The guy sitting next to him said "My son's in the Coast Guard, and it's smaller than the NYPD. I looked down at his name tent, read his last name, looked up and said "wait, is your son ______?" Yep! His son was a year behind me at the Coast Guard Academy.

I have some interaction with both the Navy and Coast Guard on the civilian side. In my limited experience, I find the Coast Guard much easier to work with. Things that happen with the Coast Guard are often with a phone call or a hand shake. On the Navy side, it is paperwork in triplicate or worse.

Slight clarification, there aren't 50,000 Special Agents in the FBI. The number is closer to 3,000.

I googled it and the FBI site says 35,000 employees. Wikipedia says as of 2012 there were 13,000+ special agents.

My DS was considering USCGA vs USNA very seriously; he opted for Navy ROTC. As a former SWO, this is the way I summed it up: Do you want to spend your time training for things you hopefully never do (Navy), or do you want to train for things you do on a daily basis (USCG). Also, from from a family perspective the Coast Guard is more appealing, while the Navy is more glamorous .
