DS was DQ'd for allergies but we have worked through the issue. We sent updated information which changed his status to Pending Waiver/Submission back in the fall. We understand that the academy will request waiver if they deem he is competitive. DS has a solid plan B. Last night he received a couple of text messages from admissions and one reminded him to work through his DQ. We thought this was weird. Any thoughts?

What kind of allergies?
DS had DQ for peanut allergy. DS successfully passed an oral nut challenge in November and results were submitted to Mr. Mullen. As stated DS went from DQ'd to pending waiver/submission.

If it is stating waiver review than you have to sit and wait. I would have him double check that his medical paperwork was submitted.

Congrats! Sounds like they are interested.

Was the nut challenge done based on a remedial request or done on your own? If it was done on your own, they may have questions.

Make sure admissions knows you've worked through the issue and have passed a nut challenge and that your paperwork is in the DoDMERB file.

The nut challenge was done on our own under the supervision of an allergist. We decided to have done to determine severity of allergy since it was unknown because DS was diagnosed as a toddler. Even it resulted in a permanent DQ it's important to know your personal medical information. In DS case it turns out that he had zero reactions during the supervised challenge and must have outgrown the allergy.

We are waiting and finalizing Plan B.... and what is meant to be will be. If nothing else, DS is determined to get into academy and will reapply next year which isn't the end of the world.

Is there a separate test for Nut to make sure candidates have nut allergies?

No. They use what you put on the DoDMERB form. However if found out later that you had a diagnosed condition you didn’t put on the form (kids eat peanuts in food served in Mitchell Hall and have a severe reaction — it has happened) there can be consequences
