Hello all,

I play the trombone and piano in my HS band and was wondering if anyone knew what type of academy bands there are (marching, jazz, regular..), how many people are involved, what the program is like, etc. I like to play and would be happy to continue in college if possible. If anyone is involved with the band program or has an idea of what it's like, I'd like to hear your insight. Thanks! :)

There is a number of bands you can be a part of : Drum and Bugle, Wind Ensemble, there is apparently a pit orchestra as well. Check the academy site for clubs and such.

I am in the cadet orchestra, and there is also the jazz band, and like falconfamily said, the drum and bugle corps. However there is not a Wind Ensemble, just an orchestra.

Thank you for the correction, I could not remember the if it was wind ensemble or what. Parent brain...

Thanks for your help! Drum and Bugle Corps sounds interesting to me... Anyone have any idea what going on during half time at football games if there's no marching band?

The United States Air Force Academy Marching Band is made up of full-time bandsmen from active-duty Air Force personnel. It is not open to cadets. I believe that the original poster was asking about opportunities for cadets.

Also, the half-time show at football games is provided by the Drum and Bugle Corps, along with falconeering demonstrations and various other events.

Drum and Bugle Corps, Falconry, and rando stuff.

since you are a trombone player you would have to switch to a different instrument in drum and bugle. No trombones in it. ds is in cadet show choir which has a band. he is playing trombone for most numbers and is performing (singing/dancing) in a few others. Cadet Show Choir is considered a mission support group which means they practice during the intramural period and ds does not participate in intramurals or training sessions scheduled during that time.

Supergirl, I know your son, I am a firstie and play saxophone in the show choir band.
