Affiliate Schools | Advanced Standing

I understand that with an ROTC scholarship, one has the ability to attend an affiliate school of the ROTC program, does that pertain to non-scholarship students as well? If one gets accepted to an affiliate school and begins to attend there, and then decides to do ROTC where it is hosted at another school, is that okay?

Also, how competitive is Advanced Standing? Do many get it? I understand that once you become a junior and do not have a scholarship or are not placed in Advanced Standing, you are unenrolled from the program. Has anyone experienced this where they are unable to continue ROTC due to this situation?

I'm looking at worst case scenarios for NROTC, entering as a senior in high school, I want as much information as I can get to enter into the Navy as an officer.

It is my understanding that the Advanced Standing option may be discontinued by the time you would be a junior in college. You still have time to apply for the 4 year National Scholarship and 3 year side loaded scholarships if you are just entering your senior year.
 
If you're looking at worse cases, seems to me the worst case is you don't try for the college program, 4 year and sideload scholarships; and then therefore fail.

Is this the last year NROTC will be offering advanced standing?

No. Current projections for AS slots for next summer match the initial AS projections for the past couple summers.

Maybe I misunderstood him during the orientation meeting but I'm pretty sure the XO for VT NROTC said they were looking at doing away with advanced standing and offering more side load scholarship opportunities in the future.
 
I think the key words there are "looking at".... doesn't sound like a decision has been made.

Side load scholarships are certainly increasing over the next several years, with the current projections showing them at least doubling over the next couple years. This is part of the Precision Loading plan put into place a year or two ago, which resulted in significantly fewer Navy National scholarships being awarded. Less 4-year Nationals, coupled by more 2-3 year side loads to offset attrition. However, I have not heard anything in regard to changes with Advanced Standing numbers going forward. The AS projections for next summer are in line with the past few summers. It's certainly possible though that there have been discussions at higher levels about changes.
