Hi everyone, my son is in AFROTC and is in his Sophomore year. He took his AFOQT in September. I am not sure what these scores indicate or how competitive they are to get a BFT invite.

Quantitative: 69
Verbal: 15
Major: Aerospace Engineering
CGPA: 3.44
PFA:97

He is color deficient so pilot spot is out. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

"To pass, applicants taking the AFOQT must score a minimum of 15 in Verbal and 10 in Quantitative. For aspiring pilot applicants, you must score a minimum of 25 in pilot, 10 in navigator, and possess a combined pilot-navigator score of 50."

If he got a Quantitative: 69 and a Verbal: 15 then he passed. The Verbal barely. I think maxium scores are like 99. If he is going non rated, then i think all you need to do is pass.

Passing does not guarantee an invite to BFT though, and since that is barely passing it does not sound promising. Hopefully his other scores and grades will get him there.

This year they aren't even requiring cadets to have taken the AFOQT by the selection date because of COVID (you'll still need to pass to contract) so it won't affect getting an invite regardless.

Thank you, I understand the importance of testing, but it has always made me crazy how a single test can decide your future be it an SAT or AFOQT as examples. As his father I worry for him often and know the work these young people have put in to get this far. I pray he gets the invite, thanks again.

I agree that one test deciding your future can be rough but remember that something has to decide your future and in the case it's each cadet's commander's ranking (I believe it's worth 60% of the selection this year).

Also, just a rough estimate, I'm guessing your son is sitting at around a 31 OM based solely on PFA and GPA and last year's cutoff was around 35 OM. That means he'll only need to pick up roughly 4 "points" on his commanders ranking or effectively just not be ranked dead last by his commander. Now obviously anything can change year to year, but that's the reference based on last year's results.

This is pretty accurate. Field training really isn't about your AFOQT score, just pass and if you're not going rated you will be fine.

My son is in the same boat. He’s non tech and non rated though. His freshman GPA was less than a 3.0, so not very competitive nationwide but for his first year at VMI I think it’s good. He’s maxed out his PFA. His commander’s ranking has him in the middle third (he says towards the top).
I have no idea how many slots they will fill. I think I’m on pins and needles more than he is. He has a back up plan, just in case he’s not chosen.

You can take AFOQT twice in a lifetime and must wait 180 days between tests. Only the most recent score counts, so if DS squeaked by with a 15 Verbal, it seems risky to retake. https://www.afrotc.com/what-it-takes/academic/

I try to talk with him about it, but not really comfortable with since he has a lot of stress to deal with anyways. I am just going to put it out there and see what he says. I am curious about his commander ranking, maybe start the conversation there and see where it leads. When do the BFT notifications go out?

My DS says official notification is next Monday, the 29th.

In an AF ROTC Detachment, if the cadre tells a cadet he is ranked in the top 1/3 does this ranking include the Commander's Ranking portion ?

Confirm that the cadre told you the "official" ranking but yeah any cadre ranking given will likely be the Commander's Ranking

Good day, I just wanted to share that my son received orders to attend field training this year. I was very proud of him, but many of his fellow cadets did not have the same opportunity. I am disappointed for each and every one of them, and I know they are pry tired of hearing "where one door closes, etc" it truly does and for each of them I say you had the wherewithal to make it this far, put your head up, shake it off and go after whatever you decide to make happen. Your young and resilient do not give up. We will be praying for each of you.
