AFROTC 2017 Selections

Congrats. My DS got one a while back for a Type 7. Excellent opportunity.

Congratulations ! My DS just received an e-mail offering him a Type 7 scholarship. Good luck to all who are patiently waiting.

My son just texted me. He received a Type 1, Any approved major scholarship!

Type 1 non tech is pure gold, there are maybe 2 others like him in the whole country. Congratulations to you and your son!

I was offered a Type 7 tech this morning.

What are the numbers regarding the amount of people that get type 1? Just wondering...

I believe I read somewhere that if an applicant was boarded at the first board and not selected they won't be reviewed again until the final board. Is that correct?

Also wondering if all candidates who didn't get s scholarship on the first board are reboarded, or are some rejected right away? Thanks

That's pretty crazy in comparison to the amount of people applying, right? Because 50 people out of 10,000+ is insane!

I believe I saw somewhere about 5K applicants are actually "boarded" (required minimums, everything in on time, ect.)

Still a very competitive scholarship though!

gill,

If you are not selected the 1st board you meet than you have to wait until the last board in March. Not everyone is reboarded.

Son didn't apply until December. He had his interview right before Christmas. He got an email this morning stating not selected this board. :( He said that his interview went well and the officer who interviewed him told him that he was sure he'd get a scholarship. Then today's non selection/maybe next board email comes today. :(

Brief stats on DS - there's more but I won't go into his details all the clubs/sports/awards etc...

1400 SAT
4.3 weighted 3.7 unweighted GPA
All AP Courses.
Taking most advanced math classes offered.
Varsity sports
Maxed out every part of the fitness assessment. 84 pushups, 1.5 mile just under 9 minutes
NASA Scholar
Leadership - Texas Boys State, team captain of 2 sports
Works 20 hours a week as a sports official supervising youth sports

Major desired is either Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering

What does he need to do or can he do anything before reboarding?

Sorry if that's a dumb question. First child applying to college, first experience with Rotc scholarship process.

He's got great background, but keep in mind at this late date there are a lot of applications from students who procrastinated (as most are apt to do). So the competition is strong. And just like with the college applications, all you can do is wait. Hang in there!

Does anyone have exact/approximate numbers on how many people get reboarded/rejected? Because I found out I was reboarded today even though I thought I was a pretty likely candidate for a type 7. My stats are 1440 SAT which converted to a 1350, 3.8 UW GPA with 7 AP classes, 94.1 fitness score, half a dozen extracurriculars. My disadvantage was a pretty mediocre interview and only one leadership role (Girl Scout Gold Award). My SAT score and gpa were above the type 7 average listed on the AFROTC website and I believe this is a pretty good fitness score. Am I just out of luck because of the lack of leadership or is there any hope for me?

That's a tough break, just for reference my stats are very similar to your sons, (I did have higher test scores) and I received a Type 7.

Best wishes for the next board.
