Just found out I got picked up for a pilot slot!

My son's Rotc cadets are being told tonight at 5pm. Kind of weird in that my son was told last year unofficially over the phone. I was looking at the Navy Rotc. They have a cool system. I guess based on Merit order, they get to choose the Ship and port of their choosing. I guess the better cadets get the better choices. I did see a trend, they chose San Diego, Hawaii, Spain and Japan as their port of call. They are doing this over a Skype type system where the cadets get a list and request a specific ship. As they are supposed to update the list as someone takes a spot its doesnt seem like a big surprise when they are told they got their choice. Then again, this may be going on with diffrent group so you may not get your first choice. Very cool as they know exactly where they will be going. Unlike the pilots where they know which of the four UPT bases (which they request and must be approved) they are going to, but no idea where they go next

Congrats. I do have a question for you as you have a Engineering degree. Seems like a lot of AF Rotc have engineering degrees. Does it bother you that after spending so much time and effort in doing well in engineering that you wont be using the degree for another 11 years at least. I promise this is sincere question and it not only pilots but anyone who studies one subject and then does a 180% switch on their careers, both in the military and in the civilian world

What makes you think pilots don’t use what they learned to get their engineering degree?

Personally as someone currently studying Aerospace Engineering and got a pilot slot yesterday, it does eat at me sometimes that I’m struggling through classes when there are plenty of cadets breezing through. However, we all know that getting a pilot slot does not mean you will for sure be flying, so an engineering career is always a great backup plan!

Not really for me. Engineering and flying are two of my passions so it doesn't really bother me I won't be doing engineering. That being said, my school offers a 100% online, self paced Mech E masters degree program that I plan on doing down the line which will help me stay somewhat proficient in engineering. Also being a STEM major opens the possibility for test pilot school later in your career.

If engineering was that important to be a pilot, then you would only allow engineers and people with related degrees to be a pilot and that isnt what happens. Now from what I read, you can only be a test pilot if you have an engineering degree. Even if having an engineering degree helps, what percerntage of what they learned would apply to flying, 5%?. In any case, it wasnt an attack on him or the degree. Having an engineering degree is a great thing to have. As he mentioned, having that degree is a great backkup in case he doesnt fly. My point was learning one thing in school and doing another has to be strange, at least for me

The ability to get a masters on line would be fantastic for you, no matter what you do later in life

A little confused since my scores were pretty competitive...?

Hmmm...your stats look really good to me too. I can never figure out boards.

Don't give up yet though. People get picked up by the supplemental boards all the time. I bet you're high on the supplemental list.

Not to get your hopes up or anything but from what I have seen people with those kind of stats usually get picked up in the supps. In addition to a supp board you can still get picked up as slots open back up over time because there will be people that get dropped for medical and other reasons. You have until the day you commission to get a slot from what my cadre told me so in the meantime just keep your head up.

That doesn't make any sense. Ask cadre if you can see the package that was submitted for you because there may have been an error. Are you sure you were medically qualified to compete for pilot? What did you end up getting? I've seen those stats with low 40 pcsm get pilot and pcsm is 40% so there is no way you did not have the scores.

How'd you rank your preferences? I know a few people with private pilot's licences and everything who got RPA because they put both pilot and RPA as high interest when they applied.

While it is true there are people who make it in with a PCSM below 80, if I remember the averages for 2017, it was around middle 90s

My preferences were pilot high, CSO medium, and ABM/RPA low. In hindsight I wish I did not put CSO medium as I now realize I have no interest in going CSO...my temporary AFSC is Space Ops which I would be more interested in. I am hoping that putting CSO medium did not cause the boards to put me CSO (maybe there was a high demand for CSOs this year?). At the same time, I do not know why they did not select me for my highest interest as I had the scores for it. I honestly do not know how they really factor in interest levels, as I have friends who got pilot slots who put both CSO "medium" and CSO (and everything besides pilot) "low"

Yes, I am sure I was medically qualified in all areas to compete for pilot. I ended up getting CSO which was ranked "medium" on my interest list. (ABM/RPA low, pilot high). I do plan on meeting with cadre tomorrow morning to make sure all scores submitted to the board were indeed correct. Thanks for the response.
