AFROTC 2018 Rated Boards

For the people that already have rated slots such as RPA, CSO, or ABM and are hoping to possibly get upgraded to pilot, does anybody know if those people will be in this board?

Not 100% sure, but I think these folks went through a supplementary board this past fall

Just a data point but a friend of DS just was notified this week that he was given a pilot slot.

He previously was picked for RPA.

This is not the supplemental board. This is basically for the As300s.

Some 300s already have their rated job assignment?

No. Pima was referring to the upcoming board where the first batch of AS 300s will receive their rated assignments. That's happening in the next few weeks. Earlier this week, several AS 400s who had either not previously been assigned a rated position or wanted an "upgrade" received new assignments.

No the people you are referring to are in a different FY, the people who are looking to be upgraded are in FY18. This upcoming board is for FY19 those commissioning before 30 Sep 19. Only AS300s/400s who are graduating in that FY will be competing for this upcoming board. Those who already have rated slots but wish to be upgraded, have to wait on others who did not pass their Flight Physicals or the Needs of the Air Force bumping them up.

I'm an AS300 up for the FY19 board. In the case that I am not selected, would I still be considered for the "bump up" since if I don't get selected for pilot I will likely not be given another rated slot (I put "low interest" for all of the rated positions other than pilot)?

In the case you do not get selected you would go up for the supplemental boards which we held at the end of Sept. But just because you put low for everything doesn’t mean you won’t be selected. But if that is the case the supplemental boards are your best chance. You are able to change your preferences as well so if you want you can go back and change them do so. But this must be done before the end of August, which is when the packages are due. Now say you put high for everything for the supps get picked up for cso or rpa, the Air Force has the power to “bump you up” to pilot before you commission. This is assuming will you pass your flight physical.

Understood, thanks for the reply. Another quick question though: I took the TBAS only once before this board. If I were to not be picked up, would I be able to take it again before going up for the supplemental?

Yes you can update your scores before the supplemental board.

No problem, I was in your shoes so I have no problem giving out the information. So yes you will be able to retake the TBAS as well as flying hours. The supplemental boards are also a way to be bumped up so if you do receive a slot and you do not want it you are able to re-compete for other rated positions. Ex. If you got ABM you can go up for he supplemental board and try to get a different AFSC. A buddy of mine got bumped to CSO and is hoping he gets bumped up before he commissions this June.

DO NOT RETAKE YOUR AFOQT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. AFROTC is no longer giving waivers for 3rd tries so you in the result you fail you’ll be shown the door. I personally almost didn’t commission due to the retaking the AFOQT in hopes of rated. There’s always the chance to apply on AD like I will be doing this fall. So just know this isn’t the end! Be excited with any results even if they aren’t the results you want. Rated slots are increasing every year so your chances will increase, but do everything right now to be the best cadet you can be and prove you deserve that slot.

Class start date is what I was referring to regarding Humey's post. You can wait 6-9 months on casual.

Back on topic, this year will be interesting. SecAF had eluded to this last year. The ADAF board is meeting in a few weeks. Rumor is that they have @160 applicants, and will be picking up 75 for pilot, the next big number is RPA at 30. If I remember ADAF has 2 boards a yr. which means basically equals out to about 150.

Now you need to include OCS. Let's say 150 for them too. Add in USAFA which can be 500+. That leaves a lot of slots for AFROTC if you go with the winging numbers. They typically wing @ 1100 a yr. Reverse it from the fact that on a good yr 35%+ will not wing you are looking at a large pool size that will get a rated slot.

For all of you 300's please make sure your medical records are in order. This is not a DoDMERB, this is an FAA FC1 that is 3 days long. They will send you to WPAFB. You will take an EKG, have eye/ear/dental exams, and a final physical with a flight surgeon. This is not about the AF waiving you for their requirements like the DoMERB, but the AF saying we can't waive you due to the FAA restrictions that take precedence over DoDMERB.

Pima, how do you suggest that we get our medical records in order? By calling our doctor's office and making sure that they have all of our information? Or by going and getting a physical? Also, does having an FAA first class medical certificate help at all?

You're right, need to keep everything in perspective and I'm grateful to even be given the opportunity! However, I wasn't talking about the AFOQT, which is separate from the TBAS. The TBAS is the computerized test that uses a joystick and rudder pedals; I know that you can take it up to two times, as long as there are 6 months in between.

Yes I know I stated you are able to retake it again. I would get flying hours then retake it, that’s the better way to raise your score. My roommate (Pilot Trainee) who is headed to Vance in 2 weeks got 21 hours the summer before our boards raised his PCSM 32 points (55) after he retook the TBAS. And I was just stating that some people may say you should retake the AFOQT I’m just saying from my experience do not.

The FAA first class medical is meaningless. My son retook it a month agao and maybe lasted 20 minutes. They are checking for a few things but it isnt a true physical in that no blood is taken although I do think they do urine. I would suggest getting your eyes examined by an Opthomologist and have them do a full examination. Lots of kids get screwed over by the eye exam. Not saying you shouldnt get your medical records in order especially if the person ha some issue that may come up, but at least for my son, they never asked for any

I was in this situation two years ago, I had an RPA slot from the Fall 15 supplemental board and in Jan 16 got a call saying I was given a pilot slot. The situation/timing was pretty non standard but could happen any given year really. So if pilot selects get DQ'd/disenrolled/drop their slot, or if the AF suddenly needs XX number of additional pilots, I would think they go through the next list of qualified folks which would be those who wanted pilot but got RPA/CSO/ABM to fill them back up. A number of people I arrived at UPT with were supplemental picks as well. I have heard of cadets getting a rated slot a month before they commissioned so getting upgraded late in the game is definitely possible. The demand for pilots is still fairly high so keep your hopes up!

Rumor has it the results will be in at some point this week...probably means they'll be delayed till next week but I'm getting excited!

DetCC let me know today that the board has happened and results are targeted to be released this Friday 16 Feb (not including the inevitable week-long delay).

While I agree that retaking the AFOQT is risky business and I have to admit that waiting for my second results was painful, it was necessary. My first AFOQT pilot was a 42, my second was a 97. That bumped my PCSM from a 10 to 56. 46 points solely from AFOQT testing, then add in the 22 flight hours and i'm sitting in a much better position. Had I not retested I would say that even with my flight hours, I would not have a chance for pilot. Huge risk, but I studied for that test like my life depended on it to ensure I'd have a fighting chance!

That’s is awesome man! I was just talking from experience because I retook it a 2nd time and I didn’t even pass. I was super blessed to be given the last waiver ever to take it a 3rd time. And I killed it like I should’ve the second time. Pilot went from 26 to 52, CSO 10 to 71, ABM 14 to 60. PCSM 11 to 27. So you’re right it’s a huge risk and do not take it unless you’re 100% rest because. There are no more 3rd chances!
