AFROTC 22 Jan Board...

patentesq,

Was your DS given any indication of when next week's Board results will be released?

My DS had everything in before the December board but was not reviewed until the January board. Now his application has been pushed to the February board and we are hoping that we will have some resolution on this in March. I'm glad that he is still in the hunt.

Blackbird, yes he was told that announcement day is March 11.

Thanks patentesq. I read "is not March 11" instead of what you wrote. I guess I need to stop attempting to do 12 things at the same time!

We checked the website on Friday and our son was awarded an ROTC scholarship but it does not say what type. It said we will get a letter within a couple weeks.

that's their standard procedure. Call immediately if you want to find out over the phone. also standard procedure.

I just received an email from the detachment commander where my son interviewed yesterday and was offered a commander's leadership scholarship on the spot. I think some of you may find this information useful:

"On the previous scholarship board last month [January] they selected 270 students to receive a scholarship, and only 14 received a Type 1 full tuition. Also, all those offers were to students who were planning to major in a technical field.

The scholarship board next week expects approximately 1200 packages to be looked at, and I’d expect less than 300 to be offered a scholarship, and only 5% of those might be full tuition."

Looking at the statistics, I am thankful my son got the offer. We just have to keep the fingers crossed that he will be admitted by the university, which is extremely hard to get into. If he doesn't get in, he will lose the scholarship offer since it is not transferable and he will not be eligible for consideration for a normal type 1 or 2.

Pima, check out KMomRN's post above. I thought these AFROTC awards were basically a blank check to be redeemed at any school. No?

You need to be thankful to that "IN". That is not meant to be offensive, it is meant to be a WOW factor. I am in awe and again WOW you can find those stats.

I do agree that type 1 is only 5% AND I can see only 300...if you do the math, I believe there are only 5K nationally on scholarship for AFROTC at any given time...4 boards a yr would = 1200. Add in those who do not accept and In College scholarships, you could see how it equalizes back to 1200.

This is true, but this is the time to place trust into the AF. If he doesn't get in, and goes to school #2, they will support him for a scholarship next yr.

Now is the time you go to school #2, and meet with the det. Have you even checked to see if they have the same option?

It appears he is a sought after candidate...i.e. a selective university offering this to him. If this school is a reach, where it was never a given re: admittance, what about contacting the match?

Patent, this is a unique program, it is not TYPE 1,2, or 7 per se. 1,2,7 etc are interchangeable for colleges that accept ROTC. What you are looking at HSSP, ; they have specific colleges and the little unknown scholarships within the AF. Sim to the fact that certain foreign language ROTC majors get bonuses. It ties them to that career and that career alone...want to go UPT and took Foreign language perks, highly doubtful you will get UPT.
