Hi Everybody,

Ok, I know I'll get maybe a couple of responses to this thread, but if you are planning to attend UH this fall and do Air Force ROTC at Detachment 175, reply and we can start a conversation. It looks like that's where I'm headed unless something changes, so if you're planning on/thinking of going, we can "talk story".

Sorry everyone else for clogging the forum with this infinitesimal thread. :)
Thanks!

I got a buddy who's going there. But hes not planning to join til next Fall.

Im joining out here in Los angeles.
Whats ur story

Im coming from the big island. Hoping to join det. 175.
Im an older dude (34) so this is going to be interesting, getting yelled at by POCs who are old enough to be my son

Any word on how competitive ICSPs and FT spots are at this det?

As far as I can tell, they give out quite a few ICSPs...my bro is in FTP right now, and the entire FTP flight of 13 (with 1 or 2 exceptions) is on scholarship. Only like 3 or 4 in that class got H.S. scholarships when they first joined. Getting an ICSP in your second year shouldn't be too hard.

FT spots are pretty competitive, but Det 175 usually nominates most of their cadets to go. Then HQ AFROTC narrows down the list (since they select for FT on a national scale).
As long as you're squared away and do well in ROTC stuff, you should get picked.

Hope to see you this fall.

Chances of getting an ICSP if I'm not smart (and am have am a non-tech)? I'm average smart, C average to be exact.
Also, Det 175's ICSP recipients on Insta seem to be only 4 this year. Correct me if I am wrong. Any idea how we actually go about getting the ICSP?

Hi! My name is Joshua and am attending UH Manoa in the fall... I am interested in joining the Air Force ROTC so it would be great if we could touch bases. Mahalo!

To be short, the ICSP is something you cannot apply for. Your Cadre will put you in front of the boards if they believe you have a chance to receive one. They and the boards will look at three to four "criteria" in assessing whether or not you should get a ICS. These are: FA Score (90+ the better), GPA (3.00 for tech majors, 3.5 for non-tech), extracurricular activities (if you are volunteering, in clubs, ect.), and the most important, Det commanders ranking (your class rank). If you are serious about getting a ICS, my advice would be to study hard (work towards getting a 3.5 for a non-tech major), workout harder (get into the 90s on your FA), and if it is not too taxing on your studies, get involved (in and outside your det).
If you have more questions, PM me and I will be happy to answer them.
I'm a POC, by the way.

Thanks for tackling that question! Good to have a POC perspective.

You (and Insta) are correct, there were 4 In-College Scholarships awarded this semester, to 3 Sophomores and 1 Freshman. That's pretty typical. They will usually pick 2-3 sophomores and 1 Freshman for an ICS. In my brother's class, 3 or 4 of them started with H.S. Scholarships, a couple more got ICS their second (freshman) semester, and then 3 more got ICS this semester. Initially, a lot of the class was not on scholarship, but the majority of those people were not selected for Field Training (NOTE: Whether you are on or off scholarship has NO bearing on getting a FT slot, as many have rightly emphasized on this forum). Ultimately, a lot of/most of the class are on scholarship; the numbers I gave above (10/13 have scholarships) can be edited...probably more like 8/14 of them have scholarships (close enough) :)

Just my opinion, but Det. 175 is very good about getting people scholarships (and really any competitive slot, e.g. Field Training). Am I saying "Come to this Detachment and you'll get whatever you want"? Definitely not. But, from what I've seen visiting, meeting some of the Cadre, and listening to my bro, they really want to help you succeed if you have the drive and determination. You just have to show them that you're serious and committed to joining not just ROTC, but the Air Force.

Shout out to somerandomafguy, his info about the ICSP is spot-on.

Hey Joshsal,

Good to hear from you! You local or from the mainland? (Don't put your address or anything, or everyone will be all over you about security, and they're right :))

I can't PM you 'cause you need more activity history first I think. LMK if you have any questions about Det. 175. Hope to meet you this fall!
