AFROTC great news! but it's bitter sweat

Ouch.... That team up north... (I'm an Ohio State fan, also probably attending there)

But in all seriousness congrats and Michigan is a great school especially for engineering

Also, sheriff, sad because I was going for a type 1 or 2 to help pay for out of state. I thought I had the stats for it (3.96 GPA, 33 ACT, 9:35 run, 65 sit ups, 33 push ups, crap ton of extracurriculars, and a good interview). So, I just had higher expectations, that's all. I do get how competitive these scholarships are though.

Yeah, maybe my interview wasn't as good as I thought. Either way, still incredibly grateful and happy! Congrats to you too (my soon to be football rival)!

No I'm from New York. Nice job!! Type 7, too? Also, you're interested in umich or somewhere else?

@oklempay

Do you rememeber which schools you listed and the order? My son listed his home state school first and then two private but didn't intend that to indicate interest order since he thought the scholarship would be good anywhere. Then last month he was contacted by that state school and offered Commanders Leadership Scholarship and had three days to accept. He declined to throw his chances back in the pool for Type I. I was wondering if that had anything to do with Type of scholarship offered or major. Son was told he would have a good chance since the commanders scholarship supposedly had higher criteria and cut off than the type 1 or 2. Son has similar stats to you but higher ACT. Was told he received highest score for the fitness test and interview. Major is an engineering field. Offered four year Type 7. Maybe had too many in same major with excellent stats and 4.0 unweighted GPAs..? His unweighted is close but not 4.0.

As listed, I had my home state school first, then my next two choices, just like your son. It went: Cornell, Georgia Tech, University of Michigan. Umich and GT are my top choices. Like your son, I didn't think that the chances would be good anywhere. I am going for a tech major too, so perhaps your hypothesis is right? Also, are you saying I can put my name back in the pool of applicants for another chance (like, lose my scholarship or try and attain a better one?)

No more chances once scholarship is offered. My son was offered a scholarship that required him to remove his application from the national pool if accepted. He decided to give up that guaranteed four year Air Force ROTC scholarship because it could only be used at that one school and it was not his first choice. They said he had a pretty good shot at the national scholarship since the Commanders Leadership Scholarship had "higher standards" than the national scholarship. We took that to mean Type 1 or 2 since this was equivalent to a type 7 since it was in state. This was a result of his interview for the national scholarship.

Stemmom is correct. Your only choice now is to accept and convert the 4 yr type 7 to a 3 yr type 2 or go to a college that will charge you IS tuition and use the type 7. You can't ask to be reboarded.

Sheriff that is why some kids get bummed about the type 7. Type 2 will allow the cadet to pay the difference of anything over 18K tuition. Type 7 will not allow the cadet to pay any difference at all. IE in Oklempay's situation UMich and GT are OOS, so for them unless they charge them IS rates, that scholarship cannot be used until they are a sophomore. Same with Cornell.

That is the big difference between the type 7 and the 2. The 2 gives them the freedom to take it anywhere they want. The 7 limits their options if they want to use it all 4 years.

Some state schools offer in state tuition as a merit award to OOS students. That could be helpful for some type -7 awardees.

Very true. I would suggest any of the cadets that received a type 7 to contact the bursars at their college choices to see how they will charge the ROTC scholarship recipients.

It all depends on how the school records this. We live in North Carolina. My son received a Type-7 (He had similar stats the original poster) last year and was offered in-state tuition to the University of South Carolina. USC shows it as OOS tuition with a scholarship added back to net out as in-state. After much back and forth with the Air Force, they ultimately would not let him use the 4 year scholarship. He would have had to convert to a 3 year. The NROTC, on the other hand, had no issue letting him use the Navy scholarship there so he is now a Midshipman 4th Class.

Yeah, that is usually how it works. They are not looking per se at the overall tuition costs after the college reduces their cost, but what the bill shows at the very beginning. In his case USC is charging/billing OOS, but offered him a merit for tuition to make it equal to IS.

IE TAMU states that if you get at least 1K in scholarships from them, they will than charge you IS even if OOS. That means the way they charge it is IS and the type 7 work.

This is so confusing that it is making my head hurt. :bang: I am very happy that my DD won a type 2, 4 year AFROTC scholarship, but I am really hoping she gets an appointment to USAFA. Yes, we have plans B, C, and D, but it sure would make the tuition issue so much easier, not to mention that she would be the happiest young lady in the entire country (well, maybe one of about 230 or so). ;)

It actually is not that confusing. It really only takes a few minutes out of your time to call either the det. at that school or the Bursar. They would automatically know the answer on how the school will charge ROTC cadets. It is either yes they charge IS for ROTC cadets no matter what or no they don't. Charging is the key word.
~ If they say yes than you use the 4 yr type 7. If they say no, than you have to convert it to a 3 yr type 2.

Now if you want me to make your cranium hurt...here goes...sometimes the type 7 is actually better than a type 2. Type 2 is capped at 18K, and has been for years. Most colleges will increase costs by 5-10% so if you enter and you are close to 17K for tuition, than by your sophomore or junior year you will be at the cap, and you are out of pocket. However, no matter how much the IS college increases AFROTC will still cover it because the deal is IS costs and not a dollar limit.

My DD has a type 2, so no conversion there. I understand about the 18K cap. She is looking at Baylor or USC if she goes ROTC. She has an excellent chance of becoming a NMS finalist (we will know in Feb) and has been promised a substantial scholarship to Baylor that will cover most of her tuition, so according to what you were saying in another post, ROTC will only pick up about 1K of tuition that is not covered and then provide $ for books and up to a $300 monthly stipend. We understood that her R&B would be on her own. But, when I called Baylor bursar yesterday, they told me that everything would be covered including her R&B if she were in the ROTC plus the ROTC gives students an extra 3K per year if they are in the unit. I clarified this with the bursar because I understood that the AF scholarship only covered tuition and I thought the NM only covered tuition as well, but she said no, it would all be covered.

I am still hoping I do not have to deal with all this, but will sort it all out after we find out the USAFA decision in March or April. We have until May 31st to make the ROTC decision, so we still have some time. I think I will just have to make sure my wine rack is full for the next 3 or 4 months and keep myself really busy.

It is how they bill and how they apply the scholarship. If Baylor states 15K merit, but does not stipulate tuition only. Than what will most likely occur is that Baylor will charge the tuition to the AFROTC scholarship and place their merit towards R & B.

Many colleges have perks for ROTC cadets. There is a sticky here that discusses this. What Baylor is saying that is their perk for ROTC cadets at their college. AFROTC will only pay for tuition. The 3K bonus is coming out of Baylor ROTC not HQ AFROTC.
~ If you review the sticky you will see different perks all over the place from every college...it can vary from something like TAMU to 25% if you are in ROTC to competing again at the college itself for more merit money because they are in ROTC.

This is old, but this is what I am talking about when it comes down to how some colleges give additional perks to scholarship recipients.
