Hi! I just finished my interview about 20 minutes ago. I don't know if this would be helpful to the people of this board but I just wanted to write down what I did and how it went as a sort of self reflection.

Before Interview:
  • I found a list of common questions that are asked and had some general bullet points of what to say for them. I could've written full responses but I felt it would be more organic to freestyle elaborate from those points.
  • I dressed in the AFJROTC Class B uniform so just epaulets and nametag and tie, no ribbons.
  • I tested my zoom audio and video. My skin tone is actually the same as my walls so I couldn't use a background lol but I just turned my desk to face one of my walls and moved some of my lighting around too. My audio was fizzing out so I deleted and reinstalled zoom and that solved it. I also used my laptop speakers when I typically use headphones but I was in uniform so that was a no no.
During Interview:
  • I had the zoom link open 10 minutes early, and waited, and waited, and waited until it was 20 minutes past when the interview was supposed to start and zoom still said "Wait for host to start meeting". I called the detachment by phone and found out they sent me the wrong zoom link which they made clear was not my fault.
  • We started immediately with the first question, "what does integrity mean to you", maybe because of time constraints or thats just the format of how interviews should go. The rest of the questions my interviewer told me were some he was required to ask and can definitely be found by googling or looking through this forum.
  • Apart from the integrity and why serve? questions, there was a very big emphasis on leadership. You need to think of specific formal or informal events where you led people to accomplish a task and know how you delegated things. Interestingly, I was specifically asked the number of people I led in each instance. I highly recommend you jog your memory on these leadership moments and give good details. My interviewer liked it when I mentioned exactly what we were doing and especially if the activity was cool.
  • After the required questions were done, he asked me if I had anything for him so I asked the questions I had. I asked what I should do to prepare before going into AFROTC (staying fit was the answer), and the different opportunities there were for cadets in AFROTC. I asked specifically about opportunities to fly because I got the CSAF Flight academy scholarship for jrotc but most of the chances to fly in afrotc are introductory and assume you dont have your license already. My interviewer was also in the space force beforehand so I asked about that and let him know of some of my career goals since I want to do aerospace.
  • The whole interview lasted 40 minutes. I also was not asked about my weight/height?!? I know interviews are supposed to go for about an hour and some of the better performing ones go even longer but since I was interviewing virtually and with the difficulties at the start I'm not sure if the length of the interview was any indicator of how it went. He mentioned a lot of the leadership activities I mentioned were cool and asked some follow up questions on them which I take to be a good sign.

For the scholarship overall, I have a very very good SAT/ACT and a 4.0 gpa and a near perfect run time but a minimal pushups and below minimum situps. Hearing about both the algorithmic approach AFROTC HSSP uses and the whole person approach, I guess I just have to wait until October 30th to see how it all turned out.

DM me for any details on my specific activities or anything in general. Really hoping for a type 1.

Thanks for reading!

My Interview went about 45 minutes too. Overall it sounds like you have a good chace at type 1 with a “very very good” SAT and 4.0 GPA. I wish we could know how well we did in the interview but sadly that is not possible. Good luck to you, Im also hoping for a type 1 this October

Lucky. Half way through mine, my officer's internet cut out. It was interesting :)

Thanks for the great insight! I hope your interview did really well!. What advice you would you give someone who doesn't have much leadership experience?

I would say that you might have leadership experience you might not have thought counts. Leadership doesnt explicitly mean directing a bunch of people to do tasks or being elected to a position. It could also be being a role model among your friends or community. Leadership could be being someone that stands out and inspires others whether they try to or not. It could be taking or opening up initiative for others. Ive intentionally left those as vague examples because theres so many ways that someone can be a leader. This might not have been the advice you were looking for but its the best I can give as just someone else in the process.
Hope i helped.
