Right now I'm an AS200 who's hoping to go to graduate school then go to pilot training after getting my master's degree. However, one big thing that's hanging over me is my vision, as of now I am disqualified from any rated slot because of it. I do however plan to get LASIK surgery after field training. My big question is the timing, right now I have to make the choice to apply for a rated EA, but I already know as of now that I will be disqualified, even though in a few months time I am getting my vision corrected so that I will be qualified. Is there still any possible chance I can compete for a rated position? Can my desire to go to graduate school, which will take two years, help me with the timing so that I can eventually get a pilot slot? How does graduate school interfere with applying for a rated slot?

I'm a current IP in the T6. While my vision was good enough to get PQ with corrective lenses, many of my buddies had to get LASIK/PRK before getting their qual. It will take about 6-9 months after the surgery before they can even begin to think about re-evaluating you for good enough vision. You can still apply for rated even if you don't have a current PQ, you will be sent to Wright-Patterson for your final physical in your senior year. Grad school will have 0 factor as that is not an permanent AFSC so you will be given your AFSC beforehand and may not even be guaranteed grad school as the Air Force will have to approve you to do so.
