Just a little background before I pose my questions:

I am currently outprocessing from West Point (was going to be a rising cow, or junior) and plan on applying to Georgia Tech as a transfer student starting this upcoming 2015 spring semester. I have considered doing an ROTC program but am having difficulty finding information pertaining to transfers.

My questions pertaining to scholarships/financial aid:

Is it possible to apply for an AFROTC scholarship as a transfer student? If so, can I apply it if I am starting school during a spring semester? If not, is there any other type of similar financial aid I can get as part of an AFROTC program? Also, my state (Georgia) has the HOPE scholarship program, which basically is an automatic scholarship that pays for full college tuition as long as you maintain a certain GPA. If I received this, would I be able to use the AFROTC scholarship to cover room and board or other likewise college expenses?

My questions pertaining to the AFROTC program:

As a prior cadet with military training and a transfer student, is there an accelerated program (similar to the LTC program in Army ROTC) and/or way to validate training events with prior experience (such as the required field training, leadership courses, etc.)?

I probably have more questions, but these are the ones off the top of my head based on preliminary research. I would greatly appreciate any input from those who have gone through a similar experience or are otherwise knowledgeable. Thanks!

Will you be starting GT as a junior?

Interested to hear the answers on this one, since AFROTC cadets are required to complete SFT the summer after their sophomore year to continue on to their junior year in the program. It will be interesting to hear what options you have.

I'm not actually sure at the moment. I think it depends on how many of my credits actually transfer over. And yeah I was looking at the SFT topics and besides the Air Force specific stuff, I've already done most of it in CBT/CFT as a cadet which is why I was wondering what I can and can't validate as far as the program goes based on my 2 year service academy experience.

I may well be wrong but I don't think you will be able to validate ANY of the SFT. Which means you'll have to go through the selection process for EA and that starts after the Fall semester. I can't imagine that your Detachment cadre will recommend you without at LEAST one semester to evaluate your potential. The soonest I think you could even possibly attend SFT (if you begin attending GT in Spring of 2015) is the Summer of 2016.....if you are selected.....which IMHO would be a serious stretch considering your unusual circumstances. By the Fall of 2016 you'll be what....a second semester senior? Not nearly enough time to finish the POC portion of AFROTC.

JMPO...but I'd finish college and look at the post college commissioning opportunities. Hopefully in a couple of years they will be better than they currently are.

Good Luck! :thumb:

I agree with Aglages the real problem is you must be a POC for at least 3 semesters even if you were selected for SFT. Understand this years selection rate for those boarded was 60% overall. God knows what the rate would be if you include those that were not supported for the board. Anecdotally from this site looking at how many cadets were not put up and dropped before the board I wouldn't be surprised if the overall rate was closer to 40% of 200/250.

I would suggest meeting with a recruiter and applying for the OCS board. Our friends DS went this route and he knew he was going OCS the summer of his rising senior year. The downside for him was he wanted to be a pilot, but because most of the pilot slots for that year group were already given to the AFA and AFROTC cadets he got CSO. The upside for him is he started UNT earlier than his AFROTC peers that commissioned in May.
~~~ He commissioned from OCS in September, went to IFS in Oct. Started UNT in Dec. Our DS was on casual status for 10 months prior to starting UPT.
As for AFROTC scholarship, they do not have two year national scholarships. You may be eligible for a det specific scholarship. AFROTC scholarships can not be used for room and board it is tuition only.
