AFROTC Scholarship 2018 - Results - January

DD received a Type 7, 4 year, convertible to a type 2, 3 year (Technical Major). Evidently they prefer in state enrollment. DD has been accepted to VMI, the Citadel and Norwich. At this stage it appears as if Norwich is the most affordable option. We are CA residents and DD does not wish to attend school in CA. Any readers been down this path? Thanks in advance...

Just recieved Type 2 Technical Scholarhip.
Stats:
ACT: 33
UGPA: 3.9
Varsity XC and Track.
Multiple officer positions in various clubs/societies.
Been in the workforce since sophomore year.
Interview was overall good, but I did stumble a little.

I just want to thank this forum for it has given me valuable information regarding the process and goals I needed to achieve. If any of you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer.

Still haven’t heard from USAFA yet.

Hi all!
Yeah, I contacted them and asked them and they sent me an email. But that doesn't matter anymore!
Just got an email a couple hours ago: Won a Four-Year, Type 1, Technical Major Scholarship!

To everyone who got selected, congratulations!! And to those who didn't, don't give up...perseverance goes a long way!

DS was reboarded. He’s pretty disappointed right now. I reminded him how competitive these are and that there’s still a chance in March, and if not then, an in-college scholarship next year. Also reminded him that the majority of officers who commission through the AFROTC program are NOT on scholarship. Didn’t seem to brighten his mood though. :) But he’s a pretty level headed young man, so he’ll get over his momentary disappointment and push on.
Congrats to all who received a scholarship!

Congrats to all who received a scholarship!
Numbers from last year:
13k applicants
only 4600 interviews
from those, 77 type 1's awarded
216 type 2's
1180 type 7's. Tell him to keep at it. The competition is fierce. Best of luck!

Congratulations to everyone who received a scholarship. :)

Unfortunately, I was reboarded. Judging by the previous posts, I assume that is the ROTC equivalent of being deferred in the college application process.
Is there anything else I need to accomplish (or anything optional that I can do), or do I simply wait until the next board meets?

Thanks!

Does anyone know if you can use a Type 7 at a private school, if the tuition is cheaper than my local public school?

Yes, the Type 7 can be converted into a 3-year Type 2 scholarship, which means it pays for tuition and "some fees" up to $18k for three years. The last year is on you if it's a 4-year school.

Check with the schools to see if they will formally offer instate tuition rates for your OOS student. Many schools are familiar with Type 7 scholarships. We are in the same boat as our DD will most likely be OOS for his top choices and he was just awarded a type 7 scholarship. One of his choices Univ of Minnesota offers in state for Type 7s.

My son wants to go to Norwich. I live in NC. Would he have to convert it to a Type 2, or would he be able to use the type 7 at Norwich? It's much cheaper than our state schools.

In terms of making your application look better, the only thing I had in mind (if I was re-boarded), was to try and get higher ACT/SAT scores (assuming they accept new ones after you've been declared eligible)...but if you have high scores already, it probably wouldn't make much difference. There's not really anything else you can re-do. Hope you get selected in March!

Thanks for the advice. I am very happy with my test scores, so I don't think I will be retaking the tests. Let's hope for the best in March.
