A quick question for y'all: has anyone ever heard of an AFROTC scholarship being offered for whatever major they want? I.E. "You have received a Type 1 AFROTC scholarship for a major of your choice". I would assume it's EXTREMELY rare if it happens at all...

Best you can hope for is one that allows any AFROTC approved major.

From the AFROTC website: "Air Force ROTC offers scholarships in all academic majors necessary to meet Air Force needs."

So, in my case, I wanted to study History (not an AFROTC approved major), but my scholarship was for any AFROTC approved major so I had to double major with Political Science (an AFROTC approved major) to activate it.

I don't know if it still is written this way, but long ago in the congrats letter it would basically state congrats you have been awarded a Type # scholarship for a tech major, or a non-tech major.
If it states a tech major than they expect you to major in a tech degree and if you try to change to a non-tech than they may not allow you to keep the scholarship. If it says a non-tech major, but you want to change it to a tech it will be easier to switch.
~ It is not that difficult to change from let's say Chem E to EE, but you still need their approval. However changing from Chem E to business, well you probably have a higher chance of finding big foot. There's a chance, but it is rare.
~ As Thunderbolt stated the intended major must be on their approved list.

It is important to note that the reason that it is more akin to locking you into a tech or non-tech field is that not every college carries every major on the list. The scholarship is tied to the cadet and not the school. IE College A and B offer History, but only College A offers Poli Sci. Let's say you only get into B. Well than you will need to change your major to an approved degree since they do not offer Poli Sci.

Would Cybersecurity or Cyber Intelligence count as a tech major or non-tech major?

We don't see it on this list of approved tech majors but it doesn't sound like non-tech:

That is probably a question for the cadre at the school. Likely it is in the computer science major family (which is a tech major) although those two specialties may or may not be. In my son's school, there is a computer science/computer science major (okay) and a computer science/game design major (not okay). While that one is kind of a gimme, there is also a computer network and systems administration Bachelor's (of Science!) which is also not considered tech.

I believe there is a Computer Science Accrediting Board that has to give a stamp approval to each school's curriculum for the AFROTC to accept it.

1st daughter received one back in 2012. Yes very rare:).
She majored in poli sci. Type 1

I received a four-year Type 2 for "any approved major," meaning non-tech. My local detachment said last year's numbers were 78% of scholarships going to tech majors and 22% non-tech and language, if I remember correctly. So it's far from impossible.

My son was a tech major but didnt qualify. He went in for Professional Flight

My daughter received the rare unicorn then... She received a Type 1 for any approved major. When she called the AF contact number in the scholarship, it said it truly was for any major...
