Hello , hoping someone might know the answer to this question! DS is currently a candidate for AF Academy and graduated HS last Spring, he is a Self-Prep at NMMI currently. In case he does not get in again this year, looking into Plan B options. He did not apply for AFROTC Scholarship last year due to the fact that his SAT scores were too low, but has significantly improved them through this process. My question is, since he already graduated HS and Is currently in college, would he be eligible to apply for an AFROTC Scholarship through the HSSP program once he is done in May? Thanks for any knowledge on this!

The HSSP application for AFROTC was due by January 31st, so that deadline has passed.

How many college credits does he have now? Read the fine print of the HSSP, it states that they must have lees than a certain amount of college credits when applying.
~ I want to say less than 30, but I have never followed that aspect since our DS got it straight out of HS. IOWS, even if he is in college, but has 24 credits he can be eligible for the HSSP next yr when he applies in the fall. You need to read the fine print for applications.

NMMI is a great self prep. Many are picked up.

I don't think you can have any college credits earned after the award of the HS diploma for the HSSP.

I won't say wrong because they tweak it every yr.
The last I knew you had to have less than 30 credits when you apply for the scholarship.

That they do, ha!

The last I recall reading was what I stated. It was pretty prominant on the old pre-Dec version of the AFROTC HSSP page. I can't find it on the new one as quickly, but will look later.

AFROTCI 36-2011, 24 April 2018 version

Para. 3.1.1. "... To be eligible for scholarship consideration the applicant must:"

Para. 3.1.1.1 "Be a high school senior, a high school graduate or hold an equivalent certificate"

Para. 3.1.1.2
"Not be (or have been) enrolled as a full-time student in a junior college or university except for joint high school-college programs"

We were both wrong, @Pima . "enrolled as a Full-time student" is the key phrase here.

No credit-hour restrictions are specified, so the requirement would revolve around what the post-HS junior college or university deems "Full-time student". A few of the colleges I attended had different definitions attached to this. Also, "full-time" and "full course load" are not synonymous.

I'd be super diligent about taking any college courses post-HS if HSSP is the goal. Make it crystal clear to the college enrollment technician that you only want to be enrolled as a "part-time student". Most community colleges will automatically enroll you as a "full-time student" regardless of whether you register for a part-time course load (usually 3-12 hours). As soon as you are registered as "full-time student" post-HS, my interpretation of the AFROTCI is that you are immediately DQ'd for HSSP (regardless of whether you attended or registered for a single day of class).

For any other parents or future cadets unfamiliar with the USAF or the military in general, always, always, always check the actual regulations themselves (and the most up-to-date version at that). Never trust a website (even an AF website) or blindly take the word of anyone serving without verifying the governing text itself. There is a ton of outdated and outright wrong information that circulates in military circles.
