My DS received an AFROTC Scholarship and had a question. I was under the impression that the scholarship was tied to a specific degree. The notice he received in the mail stated he had a scholarship to a technical field but was not specific. He put his choices as Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering in that order.

So is his scholarship good for any technical field or will he receive information down the road with the specific degree?

He can pick from one of the tech majors he listed. There should be a place in his paperwork where he lists his decision along with the university he plans to attend.

Thank you for the info! His letter said that he would get an email in around a month with additional info. He however wanted to be sure it was good for Civil Engineering as this is what he applied for at his top schools.

Rocko,

Did your DS's letter actually say the scholarship was for "a technical field?" My letter just said that I received a scholarship based on my "academic major choice".

On my application, I listed Civil Engineering as my first choice and Management as my second choice, so I was wondering if I can use the scholarship for either major? I just assumed that I had to use it for Civil Engineering; however, the wording in my letter does not specify a "technical field" as your DS's letter does.

It just got me wondering.

Thanks for the info. We were wondering about the major choice too. DS got his letter today and it stated "technical field"

Private,

If the process has not changed from previous years your scholarship is allowed to be used as tech or non-tech as long as like the others it is the majors you listed on your application.

Understand that if you go tech, but later on you want to switch to non-tech you will still need approval from them to do so if you want to keep the scholarship.

I would stress that for AFROTC, non-tech majors you will need to keep a higher cgpa, @3.3/3.4 for field training selection as a sophomore, maybe even higher if you intend to go non-rated.
