AFROTC scholarship questions/thoughts

Confused, why didn't she convert to 3 yr Type 2?

You state she wants to be in the AF, thus, I am not following the thought, since AF scholarships go to whatever school she chooses if it is on their list. Why did you decide to reject the scholarship?

I am not being antagonistic at all, I am just trying to follow the train of thought.

Great question - when she applied, she chose Non-Technical, but also selected the option of "will consider other scholarship" (me paraphrasing). The other scholarship was for Technical, of which you must select your technical degree field, none of which algin with her career choices. The Technical remained if you selected the Type 7 or converted to 3 yr Type 2. She spoke with Maxwell - their response:

a) We won't change the Tech to non-tech (we knew that but gave it a shot); and
b) It will be Tech, regardless of changing from Type 7 to 2.

We have not notified Maxwell yet of the decline, if for some reason the direction above seems inconsistent with previous guidance forum members have received, we can reach out to our local detachment to further verify.

Interesting.

Trust me next yr you will be the go to guy re: how it works for tech v non-tech, and the importance of intended major.

I would suggest for her to reapply next yr as a type 2 3 yr. If she wants to be in the AF, be smart. Inform her det commander day one that she intends to re-apply and would like their support.

Nothing will tick a commander off faster than being told on Friday, OBTW I am applying for IS ROTC scholarship and I need your input...did I forget to say it due Monday?

By telling them even now, they will do their best to mentor her and make her a strong candidate.

People forget those AD officers also have a vested interested in the % of cadets getting IS, SFT, EA, AFSC, etc.

Their AD career performances (OPRs) will have little blurbs, like...% of their candidates got.... Their job is to groom the future AF officers, and by getting the cadets their goals, they will be seen as performing in a positive manner for AFROTC.

I just received a call from our ALO this morning. He spoke on Friday to our AFROTC liaison (our ALO conducted both the AFA and AFROTC interviews so he is involved and interested in the outcome of both for DS). Anyway, the AFROTC liaison stated that ALL notifications for AFROTC Scholarships would happen this week. Again, this information came directly from the ROTC EO. I realize that there could be all kinds of caveats to this information, but in the spirit of sharing, I'm passing it along.

Update.....checked DS's status just after posting the above and his status had changed.."not offered a (AFROTC) scholarhip" . Disappointing but he has other irons in the fire. Good luck to everyone else who is waiting!

I just got an email from my regional coordinator saying I got an AFROTC scholarship, and I'm suuuppper excited!! Who should I contact to find out which type?

And for AFROTC, are recipients "assigned" to a certain school like with NROTC, or can it be used anywhere with an AFROTC det?

Thank you

VA sorry to hear the news.

FlyingIrish,

As long as things haven't changed you can take it to any school that accepts AFROTC.

The thing is you can't change from tech to non-tech without their approval.

You can call or email Maxwell and they will tell you, but honestly unless it is a fiscal decision that needs to be made in the next few days, it really doesn't matter does it?

If it is a type 7 it can only be used for a school that charges instate tuition.

Congrats to you, Flying Irish! :)

^Thanks so much! sorry to hear about your ds

Pima, thanks for the info. As for finding out which type, it's not a fiscal matter, but for my mental state, it'd be nice to know haha. plus it'd be nice to surprise my parents tonight with all the details:)

also, could you tell me which maxwell email address I should use? I don't have a phone with me.

Proud Mom you are correct.

If it is a Type 7 and you intend to go OOS you have 2 options:

1. See if the school will accept ROTC scholarship OOS as IS. Some do agree to this.

2. Convert to Type 2 3 yr.

Flying,

I don't know the email or the phone number... my brain dropped that out of my cranium as soon as DS turned 18...3 yrs ago.

Go on the AFROTC scholarship website.

I would look up their phone number, and than contact them that way. Traditionally, they will answer you have reached Capt XYZ AFROTC ABC...leave a message.

Now depending how badly you want to know. All AD members have an email account and it is John.Smith@fill in the base.af.mil

You didn't read that from me.

My status changed to "Your application met the board and you were not selected for a scholarship..." I'm somewhat disappointed, but I'm still waiting for USAFA. Hopefully USAFA comes through.

My status changed as well, it says "Your application met the board and you were not selected for a scholarship. However, based on your rank on the board, your application will be meeting the next board." Is this a pretty common occurrence?

For this yr there are many that have been re-boarded.

What it means is that you are on a cusp.

Type 1 or 2

Type 2 or 7

Type 7 or nothing.

Nobody knows which category you fall in, but odds are you def. are in one of them.

Good luck.

DS's status just changed like yours. I guess that means another 4 weeks of waiting, but at least not a final rejection

To anyone:
How plausible/difficult is it to move "up" AFROTC scholarship types while in college? For example, moving from a type 2 to a 3-yr type 1 scholarship?

My heart has alwayyyys been set on AF, but with the navy offering full tuition (assuming my transfer goes through), it is extremely tempting to pick NROTC over AFROTC. I could actually graduate w/o debt!

*AFROTC, at this point, will leave me with AT LEAST $22K per year:(

Toughest decision of my life...please help

DS's AFROTC status just changed to:

"Congratulations! You were awarded a scholarship. You will be receiving written confirmation via mail within the next few weeks. If you have questions please notify HQ AFROTC/RRUC."

Is he supposed to call to find out what type this is? DS was really focusing on Army right now (he was beginning to think other services were not interested in him). Now this. I won't be able to speak with him for two days! I am not planning to tell him until Wednesday afternoon (can't explain why).

That is good news.

When my DD received notification, she contacted her POC at Maxwell AFB, inquiring about the "type" of scholarship - they cordially responded that she will be notified by mail (Period). Apprxoimately 7-10 business days later she received the official letter.

The Maxwell POC was always very responsive to our inquiries. You didn't always get the answer you wanted to hear, but they were very responsive and helpful.

Others have suggested they were able to find out the type by contacting Maxwell, it didn't workout this way for DD. Your local detachment POC may have access to this information, maybe...

I don't think you can convert a Type 2 to a Type 1 - 3yr? Verify this information before you start planning, if $$$ are part of the equation.

Type 7 - 4yr, can be converted to Type 2 -3yr at a qualifying institution.

One thing you cannot convert, is a "Technical" to "non-Technical".

You have some exciting decisions ahead of you!
