Hello, does AFROTC have any summer programs cadets are required to attend during the summer in between their freshman and sophomore year? Thank you.

NROTC has required summer cruises. My DS is leaning towards being a non scholarship AFROTC cadet. I have opportunities to talk with many AFROTC detachments at numerous universities in the southeast and they all say summer programs are available but not required. Field Training is required between your sophomore and junior year. You have to be recommended for, attend, and pass Field Training to continue in AFROTC as a junior & senior.

AFROTC has many, many, many summer programs that cadets can do. They are called summer PDTs (Professional Development Training). They are not required for cadets, however I believe attending 1 PDT, whether it is in the summer, during the academic year, or during another break, is required to go to field training. These programs are a lot of fun and I highly recommend applying for them as you gain experience outside of your detachment and meet other cadets from across the nation. Here is a link to the AFROTC website where they list a fraction of the PDTs available: https://www.afrotc.com/about/more-than-an-education/professional-development/

I knew about base visits but didn’t know about the summer Professional Development Training. Great information!
Thank you!
